Considering Others Over And Above Self

By P Chong                    Thursday 31 December 2009

Self-centredness & gross individualism are undoubtedly two of the most grievous sins ever committed in our human relationship. We need others & to co-exist to create peace & harmony. The mind-set must be helping others to help ourselves.

Put God in your life for “Life without God is like an unsharpened pencil – it has no point.”

Forget Your Scar . . . Be A Star

. . . “I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” ~ 2 Samuel 24:24

By the end of this day, a New Year will be born. Many will take pride upon looking back at the year 2009 while others will be filling their hearts with regrets & misgivings. Whatever the situation, today is the first day of the rest of your life. Undoubtedly, you will take steps to make resolutions that you will hopefully keep & attain. Policies are good but implementation is better & the way to go! Here’s a little something as “Food for Thought”.

Does it ever occur to you that the alphabet “I” is always spelt as a capital letter? All the other second or third person is only spelt in small letters e.g. we, you, he, she or they. Significantly, it goes to show the amount of importance that’s being attached to “I” and that importance denotes egoism, gross individualism and self-centredness.

As a person, we tend to be selfish, caring more for self than others. We also tend to blame others than self. We can’t see our own faults or wouldn’t like to see. We place ourselves so high up on the pedestal that when we fall we fall hard. That’s when we’ll blame others even more with all kinds of self-justification, and rationalisation coming into play.

In any organisation, 20% are willing workers without personal motive or agenda, and 80% are onlookers, fence sitters and critics ever ready to complain and condemn. Genuinely, the 20% in reality are less than the stipulated figure. “What is it in it for me?” is the question that often come to mind. Can we ever be most willing to give to others without expecting anything in return? Jesus advocates serving others and to consider others more important than ourselves. Christians are expected to be Christ personified.

The above Biblical verse from 2 Samuel 24:24 shows David as a great giver, who understood the principle of giving. It ought to cost you something to be considered a sacrificial gift. Are you willing to sacrifice yourself not just in terms of money, but also time and effort, dedication, devotion and loyalty? Give of yourself as Jesus gave unto you. I like to stress that it’s not ability that God is looking for but your availability. Most importantly, it’s your attitude more than aptitude that will scale the altitude.

Amazing Sky Sign: God's Love

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so that the man of God maybe thoroughly equipped for every good work.” – 2 Timothy 3:16

What some well-known people had to say about the Bible:

I believe that the only way to understand any given passage in the Word of God is to take the whole Bible and place the point of it, like an inverted pyramid on that passage, so that the weight of the entire word rests upon a single verse or indeed, a single word.” Donald Grey Barnhouse

It takes the Holy Spirit to make us docile to the Bible . . . to give us the discipline to study and the humnility to accept the truth we find without twisting it.” – John Piper

It ain’t those parts of the Bible that I can’t understandthat bother me, it is the parts that I do understand. –Mark Twain

GOSPEL

There is only one gospel, on which all the apostles agreed (1 Cor. 15:11), and Paul could call down the curse of God upon anybody – including himself – who preached a “different” gospel from the original apostolic gospel of God’s grace (Gal. 1:6-8). Yet the apostles expressed this one gospel in various ways –

  • Now sacrificial – the shedding and sprinkling of Christ’s blood
  • Now messianic – the breaking in of God’s promised rule
  • Now legal – the Judge pronouncing the unrighteous righteous
  • Now personal – the Father reconciling his wayward children
  • Now salvific – the heavenly Liberator coming to rescue the helpless
  • Now cosmic – the universal Lord claiming universal dominion.

Keep Growing . . . Wisdom is Supreme

By P Chong

Originally Penned  on Wednesday, 17 March 2004

“Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom . . . ” Proverbs 4:7

No one can claim to know enough. Knowledge is dynamic and is ever growing. Either you keep pace with it or you’ll lag behind. A recent survey revealed that two-thirds of the nation’s doctors are – two years behind the breakthroughs in their own field. Think what that means for their patients! If you’re too busy to learn – you’re too busy to improve; before you know it, you’ll be equipped to live only in the past. Think how much you need to learn every day just to keep ahead of what you’re forgetting! You’ve got to become a continual learner! One of the greatest obstacles to growth isn’t ignorance, it’s knowledge, for the more you learn, the more you think you know it all. You become unteachable and stop growing. Don’t let it happen. Listen to what God says about your personal growth.

  • “Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; . . . Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” (Prov 4:6,7)
  • “The Lord gives wisdom, and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” (Prov 2:6)
  • “A wise man has great power, and a man of knowledge increases strength.” (Prov 24:5)
  • “Make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive . . . ” (2 Pet 1:5-8)

Give the Word of God a central place in your life today and make a commitment to keep growing in wisdom – for that’s the essence of happiness, knowledge and power. It is the stuff that a God-centred man is made of.

By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.”

Proverbs 24:3-4 (NIV)

Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labour in vain.” – Psalm 127:1

Where do you start getting the knowledge of God? The right place is the Bible – from Genesis to Revelation. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and teaching in righteousness so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16).

Loneliness – An Abstract Poverty

By P Chong                                                      Monday, 28 December 2009

Loneliness would aptly apply to people without friends or company – a sort of solitude by nature or circumstances. Despite having the ease of modern communication to connect with people & with each other, more & more people are falling into the trap of loneliness. This I would term as “an abstract poverty”.

Fans of Elvis Priestley would know the tune “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” Yes, I am afraid many are & this spell of loneliness or lonesomeness cut across all economic divide, race, creed or sex. Some people just find it hard to reach out for the phone even to talk to somebody. Others may even be lonely in a group . . . harbouring fear & inhibition of reaching out to people . . . unable to trust others . . . incapable of interacting . . . feeling secluded, isolated, unwanted & lonely. This is indeed a serious indictment, a real social issue which ultimately lead on to health problems.

Ever feel dejected in a party, like a fish out of water and just dying to get out of the place in a jiffy? Loneliness breeds a host of problems: social awkwardness or shyness, emotional strain & stress, suicidal tendency, reclusiveness, unfriendliness among others. How can this come about when making friends is just like smiling or merely extending a hand for a warm handshake? Struggle of this nature often accentuates the loneliness.

I believe the nature of the person has much to do with the resultant social behaviour. Some people just can’t accept dejection, as with a friend of ours, who because of love dejection jumped from a high floor of the building where the ex-lover worked. Things can really get out of hand, mind confused, and the life of a perfectly healthy lady was lost because of loneliness & dejection.

In another extreme, I have known of men driven to brutality & murder on ground of dejection. Emotion is a strong force, uncontrollable at times, and for the likes of them many are instituted. As a board member of the visiting board to a mental institution in Malaysia, I have witnessed many sad cases of perfectly healthy young men & women in confinement.

Crisis of loneliness can be attributed to three statistical “Ds” – death, divorce & deferred marriage. The last category is becoming more rampant with feminism drive, individual freedom & independence, especially in highly developed economics, for which even Singapore is famous for. Over there in Singapore, with the trend of social status & security, the fear of being unequally yoked, ladies are entrapping themselves in the loneliness enclave.

A sudden or unexpected demise of a spouse is often hard to bear. The years of companionship are irreplaceable, & from grieving ultimately to loneliness. Others through incompatibility, the selfish need for change, excitement or adventure, by choice find themselves in the divorce courts. Whatever justifications may be unfolded, the underlying cause of all this is self-centredness or gross individualism. Have you ever thought of this that “I” interestingly & symbolically is always spelt with a capital letter . . . meaning Individualistic, Independent & Idiosyncratic. Whatever happened to the traditional value of commitment & attachment?

In this fast changing world, it would be difficult to implement the basic fundamental solution to our social ills & ailments. People would generally chose the easy option of quitting rather than working it out.

The Golden Years of Togetherness

God’s basic commandment is “Love”, but the price tag of it is switched upside down in our modern day living. The first great commandment of God is, as Jesus said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” and the second great commandment is: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself”. (Matthew 22: 37-39).

The Great Wall of China

By P Chong                                                                                                     Saturday, 26 December 2009

"Wan Li Chang Cheng" 1989

Wan Li Chang Cheng” – literally means “Ten Thousand Miles Wall.” It’s not one great wall but a monumental series of wall that constitute The Great Wall of China. They were erected over the centuries to thwart & deter the barbaric invaders from encroaching upon the Middle Kingdom. The Wall twists through Chinese dynastic history. Today the nation welcomes visitors near & far together with their wallets. What the visitors, more than a million a year, really see is the impressive gleaming stretch of wall at Juyongguan near Beijing. Such commercialisation is marring an archaeological treasure as claimed by preservationists.

Teaming crowd of visitors

It’s been more than a fifth of a century since I first stepped & climbed The Great Wall of China. To tell you the truth, the feeling & excitement were simply beyond me! I had led a party of ten to China, all of them virgins in this world of ancient civilisation. Coincidentally, May/June 1989, saw the Tiananmen political debacle undertaken by the students.

In all the years since the landing on the moon, Western writers declared, with absolutely no evidence that the Great Wall could be seen from there. But what Deng Xiaoping, the small & yet most dynamic of a man, proclaimed “Let us love our China, let us restore our Great Wall” has become a well-known slogan.

In the passage of time, I have seen great growth, progress & changes:

From Friendship Stores to Departmental Stores

From virtually no phone to modern convenient cell phones

From million bicycles to million vehicles.

This is truly representative of a complete transformation & material revolution unseen & unheard of in the history of mankind! All within one lifetime, one generation!!

However, there are walls which tourists seldom get to see or visit in the outer reaches where there are crumbling sections of the Wall awaiting attention & preservation. The crumbling walls were never far away, a companion piece to the halfway stage of China’s rush to progress.

Visibly, there are signal towers & walls that stretched out for miles in ruins & villages entirely contained by high-walled forts for security purposes in the ancient days. Some homes carved out from the Walls have 20-foot-thick walls – “Very warm in the winter, cool in the summer”.

"With courtesy of Richard Chiang who purchased it from the Wushipu Oil Painting Village of Xiamen in May 2008.”

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

It is truly amazing! Now that the smoke signals are replaced by cell phones, what is there in store for the ruined parts of the Wall where even certain sections have disappeared. Will modernity bury archaeology? Will a history of more than 2,000 years be lost in a time vault or capsule?

The World’s Longest Golf Course

By P Chong                       Friday, 25 December 2009

Australia pride itself as the world’s most sporty nation. It is thus

not surprising to find the Aussies excel in many sports & games. Now, Australia has come out with “The World’s Longest Golf Course”.Believe it or not, it has just been

completed in 2009 & the attraction is now available to the general public.

We are referring to the Nullabor Golf Links – the Real Australian Golf Course. It is unique, exceptional & only one of its kind anywhere in the world. Imagine teeing off in Kalgoorlie, Western Auistralia, knowing excitedly that the 18th hole is some 1365 kilometres away in Ceduna, South Australia.

Whether you are a golf fanatic, a Nullabor traveller, or you simply like outdoor sports, the Nullabor Golf Course is sure to satisfy you! Be amazed by the thrills & spills including the frustration of the game & be taken in as a sum total of your out of this world’s experience.

This will be setting you up to tee off on outback-style of natural terrain fairways. Each participating town or roadhouse along the Eyre Highway will contribute to the 18-hole par-72 golf course.

The course will become quintessential Australian experience adding a different flavour to the existing attractions for travellers along the Eyre Highway. A typical itinerary for a Nullabor Links golfer include the following:a visit to the Super Pit mine in Kalgoorlie:

      • a night or two at the Fraser Range Station
      • the amazing cliff-top views of the Bunda Cliffs

with at least one round of golf enjoyed at each location.

Be out there & be the pioneering heroes.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder: The City That Gold Built

By P Chong                   Thursday, 24 December 2009

Perth to Kalgoorlie Route Map

A place revisited somehow reveals quite different nostalgia & expectations of your earlier perception. It can never be quite the same thing, especially with the passage of time & circumstances. Kalgoorlie-Boulder, the City that gold built, has grown & changed. Thinking that you might still be familiar with the environment, you begin to feel like a stranger once again.

Statue of "Paddy" Hannan

This business-cum-pleasure trip in the Toyota Hiace business van of Darren, my son-in-law, to Kalgoorlie, was really unplanned. I conveniently tagged along together with Matti, still on school holidays, is thoroughly enjoying every moment of it.

AHG Wangara
Nissan Wangara

Darren is in the FlagDisplays.com business. He’s always just a phone call away 0408673524. His clients are largely drawn from the car yards in & around Perth. But he does cover extensively down south to Albany and to the east up to Kalgoorlie. Every few months he would undertake a trip to these far away places, serving existing clients, taking new orders & making new contracts.

In Wangara, the AHG (Automotive Holding Group) conglomerate of car dealerships is one of his biggest clients. AHG has its major operations in Western Australia, New South Wales & Queensland. FlagDisplays.com offers prominent colourful visual display to attract attention.

Along the way, Darren serviced some clients in Midland, Northam & Merridin and ultimately Kalgoorlie.

in Midland

Business aside, we had a fun time pitching up our tent for our night’s accommodation at Discovery Holiday Parks. Strangely enough and especially at this time of the year, Kalgoorlie-Boulder experienced some light showers which persisted through the night & early morning.

A kaleidoscope of sights seen & pictures taken in Kalgoorlie-Boulder:

The Oldest Brothel in Kalgoorlie - Questa Casa
The Super Pit
The Sheer Size ...Be Amazed!

The Super Pit or Fimiston Open Pit produces up to 800,000 ounces of gold a year  together with the underground operation at Mount Charlotte. A lot of gold indeed . . .

You can still see the old miner’s working with old shafts  visible in the Super Pit. But a tour of Australia’s largest gold producing mine is a must on your first visit to Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

Here lies the historic City of Kalgoorlie, the centre of Australia’s gold rush, still having its roads paved with gold – some 600km’s east of Perth in the Australian Goldfields.

A visit to Kalgoorlie wouldn’t be complete without having a drive along Hay Street past the infamous “Red Light” District with the world’s oldest profession. This is reminiscent of Germany’s Hamburg or Hannover or even Holland’s Amsterdam or Rotterdam – all famous for the one same trade.

I find Kalgoorlie more vibrant than Perth & a City as diverse as it is cultural. Magnificent architecture galore displayed by its many hotels, its Town Hall, relaxing cafes, lively night life & bars . . . all thriving in making Kalgoorlie a major service hub for the active resource industry.

Kalgoorlie retains its pride & traditions. It is without doubt that as gold is its beginning, golden will be its future.

My Life As A Teacher In Malaysia

By P Chong             Thursday, 24 December 2009

Anderson School Ipoh, Malaysia Staff 1967 . Self: Seated front Row (L to R) 6th

This is my true life story in Malaysia as a teacher & I will tell it as it happened without frills & thrills or sensationalism. It will however reflect the strong & principled character of a young man in his audacity of doing the right thing, irrespective of whom he was dealing with.

Edward (not his real name) was a nice young lad, tall & slender with a handsome smile. It was a delight teaching him. He always produced the neatest work you can ever expect from a class of 25. His handwriting was like print, and his assignments were excellent. He was a straight A student with a tremendous future ahead of him.

He almost didn’t get to complete his sixth form studies (pre-university level or Higher School Certificate as is known in UK). This was on account of the fact that he was from a poor background, his mother had to wash clothes for people to support him in school.

I was literally disgusted with the whole issue of meritorious fairness. The way of allotting scholarships to needy & worthy students by the Malaysian government was grossly unfair & unjustifiable, apart from the simple glaring fact that it was utterly discriminating on ground of colour & race. What sickened me the most was a good many students in my class were bright but poor & certainly could do with some financial aids. They were excluded simply because they were not “sons of the soil” (bumiputra) even though they might be born & bled in the country – and that could mean stretching from one generation to the next.

Without exaggeration, the top students in the class were all the non-scholarship holders, while those at the lower end of the scale & holding scholarships were a wonder how they got admitted to the sixth form in the first place. It is a known fact that even today the Malaysian government set a lower criteria for entry for these privileged students. I am speaking of my time then in the mid-1960s.

Edward came up to my desk one day and said, “Sir, I have to leave school.”

Shocked & unbelievably I asked, “Why Edward?”

My mother just couldn’t give me the money for the examination fees. It’s time I work & earn my keep & help her.”

But don’t you realise that you’ll be throwing away the opportunity for a bright future by depriving yourself of a university education. You are my smartest boy & exams will be no problem for you.”

Inwardly, I had realised the plight he was in, and I said, “Don’t worry. We’ll find the solution if that’s your only problem. Just stay on.” Somehow that problem was later solved.

Sixth Form Class

As the form teacher, there are certain responsibilities which you bear that those relief or subject teachers don’t, for instance, keeping the students’ records, attendances & providing them with testimonials upon their graduation. Now with Edward who topped the class, he was unbeatable in virtually every other respects, except for sports & athletics. So, in my book, he was the dux deserving an excellent testimonial.

However, the principal of Anderson School, Ipoh, a premier government school, was a man who was most difficult to get along with. He was authoritative, arrogant and always prowling around, spying & ready to pounce literally like a “tiger” on teachers who were slack or shirking in their duties.

His relationship with me was far from civil or polite, to say the least, ever since he noticed my brand new Volvo 122S (1967 Model) parked in the school. It was a creamy colour 4-door sedan – something he vowed not a possibility for a brand new graduate to own, that is, if he had to depend solely on his teacher’s salary.

I was really a young man in a hurry during those days. I didn’t just get income from my teaching school alone, I worked full-time, part-time, past-time & part-past-time for most times in other areas of human endeavour. For instance, I had the energy for teaching Further Adult Education classes at night, lecturing teacher-trainees (R.T.C.) during the weekends, engaged in lucrative part-time life insurance sales with Prudential . . . all generating the extras for my extras. Finally, by the time my teaching contract bond with Education Ministry expired, I had decided to put both my two feet into the challenging field of life insurance sales with AIA (of the now AIG fame). That was the time, I burned my academic bridges behind me . . . I was also utterly sickened with the state of education affairs of fairness & discrimination. Besides if you have one foot in the fast track travelator while the other is on a snail track, you’re likely to be dislodged. That was the year 1970 when I quit my teaching life as the Sr. Geography Master.

On this account, Mr “Tiger” was unhappy about having one of his subordinates having something better than his. It was obvious from that day onwards he was trying to make my life miserable & intimidating. One aspect of it was he wanted me to always address him as “Sir”.

With due respect, I am being more than polite addressing you as Mister. If you were in the medical profession, it’s a tremendous honour to be addressed as such. For unless you’re a surgeon, you’re commonly addressed as Dr. only,” so I told him.

I would further stress that if a person were knighted by the Queen, then he deserved to be addressed as “Sir”. “But you’re only an education officer, now why would I have to address you as “Sir”?”

The Sr. Assistant of the school was my friend & supporter, he was listening with great interest to the squabble we were having. When I came out of the office, he was giving me the thumb up & a broad smile, as did some of the other staff. There was no love lost between me & Mr. “Tiger”!

In the end, after all the aggravation, he signed the testimonial for my boy. The last I saw Edward was at Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank in Petaling Jaya & it was gratifying to know that he was a top executive officer of the bank – a position he might not have had were he not able to finish school & got on to the university. That must have been in 1982, the year when my whole family migrated to Perth.

New U.S. Dollars For 2010

By P Chong                     Monday, 21 December 2009

BREAKING NEWS . . . 24 April 2010The Treasury Department of the Unites States of America has announced that they are introducing a new 100 dollar bill, which hasn’t been remade since 1996. © AP

Ben S. Bernanke Swearing-In

Never fail to be amazed by the American authorities over their ways of deception in covering up events & keeping them under wrap for tens & tens of years. In the interest of national security, they often get away even with murder. Through the intricate web of the CIA, no information can be fathomed, and who through their secret mighty arms undoubtedly have been causing political upheavals globally.

Now with the economy in shambles, unemployment hitting double-digit limit, the continuing fall in the value of the Greenback, the US Federal Treasury printing away its paper money without relent . . . Obama Administration has yet to come up with any positive solution except digging its hole deeper & deeper for its ultimate burial!

Now perhaps, Ben S. Bernanke, who was first sworn in on February 1, 2006, has just been endorsed by the Senate panel for another term as Federal Reserve Chairman, has “finally” made a “right” move in coming out with the nation’s new dollar bills, including introducing a $200 dollar bill in 2010. As with Time’s pick of Bernanke as the Man of the Year receiving few cheers on Capitol Hill, this “new clothing” will be more of a distraction than attraction in solving the nation’s dire economy & its dwindling world domination.

Pictures of New US Dollars in 2010

Be the first to know the new U.S. Dollars.
There is $200 bill start from year 2010

Could the move be nothing but a rumour? However, it’s interesting just reading about it . . . showing how desperate the American authorities are. Dressing up the dollars & giving them a new look might lift the economy . . . anything to offset the gloom & doom. Perhaps it might just boom come 2010.

The imminent issue of the new million-dollar bills would not only celebrate the hyper-stagflation expected by the beginning of 2010, but also ward off more rumours & speculations by a Russian Professor Igor Panarin about the breaking up of the U.S. into parts & parcels of smaller states with the nations of the world having a feast or a piece of the cake! (Please read my article “Empires Rise Empires Fall In Peace Or In War” October 27, 2009).

Will a new global reserve currency replace the US Dollar in 2010? With Bernanke continuing in creating massive supplies of U.S. Dollars, the coming new year may yet bring louder voices demanding that the dollar be replaced. The outlook does not seem bright!

From a Weiss Research Inc. recent survey, it’s said that more than 90% of their readers believe that “Washington will NOT stop its spending /borrowing/money-printing binge in time to avoid a bond market meltdown . . . soaring interest rates . . . and, ultimately, a tragic, double-dip recession.”

Interestingly, from a recent RT-TV Keiser Report, it is said that American is now a Banana Republic without the Banana!
