Oregano – The Herbal Cure For Cough

Oregano with Pinky Flowers

From the Editors of ‘Bottom Line Health’ in the edition of “Uncommon Cures for Everyday Ailments I came across these lines:

“The herb Oregano can be a powerful cough soother. Make as tea with a teaspoon of dried Oregano steeped in a cup of hot water. Strain before sipping. You may drink up to three cups a day during a cold or coughing spell.”

Ref: http://www.BottomLineinternational.com

The warm, balsamic and aromatic flavour of oregano makes it the perfect addition to Mediterranean and Mexican cuisines. This popular herb whose name means “mountain joy” is available throughout the year.

Oregano is known botanically as Oreganum vulgare and is called wild marjoram in many parts of Europe since it is closely related to the herb that we know as sweet marjoram. It is a small shrub with multi-branched stems covered with small greyish-green oval leaves and small white or pink flowers. In Mediterranean climates oregano grows as a perennial plant, but in the harsher climates of North America, they grow as annuals. It’s a good ground-cover too.

Culinary oregano is a signature flavour of many Italian, Mexican and Spanish dishes. Most cooks are familiar with it in its dried form, but oregano is a hardy perennial plant that is easy to grow in the home garden. A handful of plants will provide you with enough oregano to use fresh in season and to dry for use throughout the winter.

Oregano seems like a straightforward enough herb. Anyone who has tasted a tomato-sauce-topped pizza can recall its flavour, which is hearty and assertive with a peppery bite and a zing. Yet once you take a closer look at oregano, things get a little confusing.

Many plants are loosely classified as oregano. Their flavour depends largely on where they’re cultivated; in general the hotter the sun, the stronger the flavour. To add to the confusion, some reference books call oregano “wild marjoram,” and many recipes suggest that the two herbs, both members of the mint family, are interchangeable. In fact, there are so many varieties of oregano that rather than thinking of oregano as a specific plant, one ought to think of it as a particular flavour.

Fortunately (or not, depending on how you look at it), when you buy fresh oregano, you’re rarely given a choice of variety. For much of the year, most stores sell Greek oregano, which is what the largest herb suppliers offer. But depending on the season and the availability of Greek oregano, you might instead find Mexican oregano, or some other variety. Though the flavours of these oreganos may be a little more or less intense (Mexican is usually stronger) they can be used interchangeably, so there’s no need to bring your botany book along to the grocery store.

My Gmail Account Has Been Hacked!

My Two iMac Computers

Nothing is safe from the computer hackers these days. Just when you think you have a magic formula, absolutely secure & sound, it hits you & left you wondering how it all happened!

Thought I didn’t have to worry about being hacked with the “Rolls Royce” of computers, certainly the most user-friendly Apple-system, generally free from viruses & all unwanted problems. I was using gmail for my emailing which I used in combination with the Apple Mailing System making it a system I thought would never fail. Gmail is generally free from spam & junk mails.

It was too good to be true. My romance with Apple & Gmail ended on the morning of 7 September 2010 at precisely 4.42 am. That day proved to be a day of very mixed feelings . . . annoyance, frustration, panic & distraught and even unbelievable laughter.

My son-in-law Darren was the first to ring me up just checking that I didn’t out of the blue landed myself in London, lost my wallet, broke & stranded needing money to settle my bills before getting home. It was laughable for he has just seen me & there was no mention of my going to London. Even then, I could not have been there that magically fast. The email which he received, purportedly from me, asked for help of 2,200 Pounds.

Several other friends in my email loop also called up to check whether I was in Perth and was really in London. One lawyer friend played along with the hackler’s request, requesting for address or bank account to which he could forward the money, same amount of 2,200 Pounds. Below as attached was what transpired between my friend Julian & the computer hackler (who was impersonating as myself):

Hi Paul.

How should I remit the money to you? The fastest is by TT, have you got a bank account I can remit the money to you?

Julian.

Nothing further developed from there. But would any recipient of the fraud email be stupid enough to send the money? Just reaping 5% or 10% of the recipients would mean quite a substantial haul!

Up to this point in time, Gmail Administration just would not release my gmail correspondences back to me. As far as they are concerned, I am a suspect – a “suspect” whose privacy has been intruded upon and suffering from fear just how far will the perpetrator go! You fear about a host of other things . . . someone out there could be impersonating you all the time. What of your internet banking, internet share trading . . . what kind of security can you expect? Your bank deposits . . . credit card transactions . . . what sort of protection can you have?

Please just be warned about the way you use your computer. Time & time again, people have been advised about their forwarding of mails by deleting the sender’s name & address or using bcc (blind carbon copy) in order to protect people’s privacy & to prevent unwanted harvesting of email addresses.

Perhaps we have not been vigilant. I have been advised to turn off the computer when you are no longer using it. Imagine some smart alex waiting in his parked car outside your house waiting to bounce upon you. When in doubt & plagued with your computer problems, best to call in the experts.

Please don’t send any further emails to this dead address:

Stopping that Nasty Cough!

By P Chong                                        Friday 17 September 2010

A sudden, noisy, and violent expulsion of air from the chest, caused by irritation in the air passages, or by the reflex action of nervous or gastric disorder, etc.

This is my personal testimony, often plagued with hay fever or catching a persistent uncontrollable cough . . . like picking bad habits . . . like having a cough of death!

If you are one of those unfortunate number that suffer from persistent & uncontrollable cough that keeps you wide awake at night (or even during the day), not just yourself but others too, it is time that you hear of this simple effective treatment for that nasty cough!

It is recommended that you do away with all past treatments & medicines. Forget about:

* antibiotics

No fear of harmful side-effects, as often accompanied strong medicine & prescriptive drugs.

You are absolutely guaranteed to feel extremely soothing & comforting with a sound sleep!

It works 100 percent of the time, although the scientists at the Canada Research Council (who discovered it) aren’t sure why.

Treatment:
Vicks Vapour Rub is your magic medical formula.

All that you need do is to put Vicks Vapor Rub generously on the bottom of your feet at bedtime and then cover them with socks.

Even persistent, heavy, deep coughing will stop in about five minutes and you’d stay relieved for many, many hours. You’ll sleep comfortably & be free from that nasty cough for hours on end!

Cough medicines for kids often do more harm than good
due to the chemical makeup of strong drugs.
If you have children or grandchildren, pass it on. If you end up sick, try it yourself and you will be absolutely amazed.

How to stop cough in 5 minutes!!! This is a must try . . .

It works like magic!

Remember where to rub that Vicks Vapour Rub . . . not near your nose, throat or chest as we all are likely to do BUT on the bottom of your feet!

Drug companies will not want to have this publicized for commercial reasons.

Cullen’s Chardonnay is World’s Best

Cullen Wines, one of the oldest and most revered Margaret River wineries, has beaten more than 10,000 entries in the world’s biggest wine show to win the top prize for the world’s best chardonnay.

Margaret River producer Cullen has won a trophy for the world’s best chardonnay at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2010. The Cullen Kevin John chardonnay 2007 was one of 28 international trophy winners chosen from nearly 11,000 entries in the annual awards announced in London.

It beat hundreds of chardonnays from around the world in the over-$18 category, including wines from France, Italy, Spain, New Zealand, the US, Chile, Argentina, South Africa and even China, in what is one of the most fiercely contested categories.

Winemaker Vanya Cullen said that while 2007 was a great vintage, the wine also reflected the biodynamic techniques used since 2004.

It’s said that a man is as young as he feels

However, like good wine she mellows with the years.

Kalamunda, Perth, WA – “A Home in the Forest”

By P Chong

Canning Road – Once Just A Dirt Track

Kalamunda is named from the Aboriginal words “cala” meaning home, and “munnda” meaning forest, thus Kalamunda means “a home in the forest

Up in Perth Hills perched this unique village that will consume your heart with many delights . . . shopping, eating, hiking, or arts & crafts, history & modernity, all of which will capture your hearts with new experiences.

Unique Sunday Farmers’ Market . . . First Saturday Monthly Market . . . MUST SEE!

KALAMUNDA, up in Perth Hills, among the trees

Where once the train zig-zagged up its way in spree Gumnut Fountain at Kalamunda Town Entrance

It used to be a health and holiday resort

With scattered stilted buildings of sorts.

Kalamunda of old had a post office and chemist

A closely-knit community with just one dentist

A doctor, two butchers, a guest house and a pub

Nothing buzzing like the present hub.

Canning Road was nothing but a narrow dirt track

With trees on both sides to spread

Today’s traffic come and go

That was never seen before.

The air was fresh, the trees were green

The atmosphere was certainly most serene

The Greenies then would have no complaint

There was nothing absolutely needed to be explained.

Present Kalamunda is one of changing scene

With new developments everywhere to be seen

Kalamunda Central appears so monstrous now

Striking out the rural setting of renown.

To grow to progress is to change

Kalamunda could never be the same

Generally changes are met with resistance

Time alone will render its assistance.

With the growth of facilities will bring

Hopefully a steady stream of beings

Population must increase, business will surely grow

Kalamunda can never be like before.

It is heartening to know that one of your former students

distinguished himself in the Malaysian Civil Service with

a Datuk title conferment by the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong in 2004.

Here’s one person whom every Andersonian should be proud of !

Class of Upper Six Arts 2 1967.

He joined the Ministry of International Trade and Industry – MITI after graduating from MU (Malayan University in Pantai Valley, Kuala Lumpur. While in MITI he had the opportunity to serve in the overseas offices in Cologne, Germany (1976-1980) and in Tokyo (1980-1984) as Trade Commissioner/Trade Attache.

He also had an assignment in Geneva as Economic Counsellor in Malaysia’s Permanent Mission for 3 years from 1989, where he was involved with the Uruguay Round multilateral trade negotiations. They were all very enriching experiences.

Before he retired he was the CEO of the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation for about 6 1/2 years, a government agency responsible for promotion of Malaysia’s exports. It was a challenging and interesting job, although a bit tiring sometimes with all the travelling. In fact he visited Perth a number of times , but was not aware that I was here.

Now he is doing some trade and business consulting .

He has 2 children, a boy and a girl. His son in fact will be going to Murdoch University, Perth in February next year to do a degree programme in Mass Comm, after his Diploma in KDU College in Kuala Lumpur.

His daughter , who has just finished her A levels, has also applied to study in Australia. She has submitted applications to a few Universities, including University of Western Australia (UWA). She is keen to pursue international relations and economics.

His children are relatively young compared to those of his other classmates because he settled down comparatively a bit later. He left Anderson School, Ipoh end of 1967, a prima school where I taught as the Sr. Geography Master from 1966 to 1970.

He was born in November 1947. His Datukship is a Federal award ( Panglima Jasa Negara – PJN ) , which he had the honour to receive from the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong in 2004.

Cymbidium Orchids – Springfield, Kalamunda

By P Chong

Orchids ever so beautiful and lasting

Prized for their beauty & durability

Their quality & variety beyond compare

Come Spring even faint hearts dare!

Spring is the season for orchids. They come in a variety of colours, shape & sizes. It’s the

flower that walks & captures the heart with its fragrance & charm, beauty & sweetness such as like nowhere to be found.

Nado Lenkic – Owner Operator

There’s a place called “Springfield” at 32 Lyndhurst Road, Kalamunda, W. Australia which specialises in Cymbidium Orchids. I have known the owner-operator Nado since the mid-80s. It’s his home & his large backyard provides him with lots of space for sheds for his beautiful Cymbidium orchids. He can be reached on (08) 9293 3196 or email: nado@iinet.net.au. He even has a website: www.springfieldorchids.com.au.

Kalamunda, a delightful place to visit, is up in Perth Hills, which used to serve as a holiday place for recreation & rest for the people down below.

I have found his prices to be very fair and good in terms of value as compared to a lot of large commercial nurseries.

The Chinese calligraphy symbols on this scroll poem say “The most beautiful orchids grow on the bottom of the gorge, the orchids fragrance fills the forest.”

This Land Of Ours

This land could be Australia, Malaysia or Middle East . . . OR A PROWLING IMPERIALISM!

THIS LAND  is not my land

Neither is it your land

This land is God‘s gift

To inherit it you must fit

That you love one another

Sharing with one another

Giving and not just taking

The only this land will prosper

Together we shall have a life that’s proper

Australia will grow and progress

And each one of us will beget success.

Whatever you may possess, you are but a custodian . . . for nothing really ever belong to anybody in terms of time & space . . . eternity! We are but passing ships that sail through the night. With each dawn, there’s the new port of call . . . everything is in transition – nothing of permanence.

But the land will be there for all times & throughout eternity. Many a great general in historical past,  or like the Trojans or the Romans, ALL have come & gone. What’s sense is there to fight & dare . . . to invade & dominate ?

Let’s co-operate & share with one another for the benefits of all!

A Tribute to Mahanum bt Itam

By Paul Chong                                              Thursday, 9 September 2010

From a senior civil servant in Malaysia to the status of “Mother Teresa”.

Ms. Mahanum Binti Itam 63, retired Director General, National Housing Department, Malaysia, has had a full & active life serving the Civil Service in various capacities including Defense Ministry, Health Ministry, University Hospital, Ministry of International Trade and Industry and Ministry of Rural Development.

She has seen the world & through dealings internationally, has acquired relevant knowledge, skills, experiences and aspiration that assist in her executing challenging tasks while in service.

For one who has aspired & retired as a top civil servant in Malaysia, one would be expected to lead a life of ease & pleasure for the rest of one’s natural life.

Not in a million years for this unassuming dedicated character Mahanum, who happened to be a former student of mine from the prestigious Anderson School, Ipoh, Malaysia. She was here in Perth visiting some relatives of hers from September 2 -12, 2010.

It was a rare occasion for teacher & students to be meeting up again especially after a lapse of two score & three years. I feel both proud & honoured to have this privilege to have been her Form Master in the Class of 1966/67 Sixth Form Arts.

As a teacher, you often wonder whatever happened to this or that student – often you never know. Straight after their graduation, each person went his or her own way in their life pursuits, never really ever to meet again.

It’s always gratifying to hear of your students’ successes, and to know that they still remember you.

Before her retirement, she wondered why she was wearing expensive clothings & having an expensive lifestyle when there are so many poor kids around. Prompted by this realisation, she sold off all her collection of expensive stuff And landed assets and built in 2000 an orphanage on her parents’ land somewhere off Teluk Intan in Perak.

She’s like Malaysia’s own “Mother Teresa” – even more so, if I may say so, to be running it all by herself only supported by her cousin Janariah bt. Md. Shah who takes care of the tremendous amount of washing. Mahanum’s day begins at 5 am and the comfort of the repose comes round only by 10.00 pm. at night. She has at the moment 50 kids – all mostly from problem families.

She is single, never got married, still quiet & reserved – and fully dedicated to her ideal of helping poor kids. Friends may find her sometimes to be aloof . . . but she has a heart of purest gold. I dare say few men can match with her high ideals nor dare to venture like she does. She’s a real quiet selfless achiever.

Malaysia could do with more people like her calibre with a true dedication to serve the community. She step out of her comfort zone to personally and sacrificially pursue her worthy ideal. She does personify the alma mater‘s motto: “To Strive, to Seek, to Find & not to Yield”. She does what she does best in her own quiet unspoken way.

As an outsider now, looking in from “Down Under”, I am often both appalled & distressed by the economic havoc & deterioration of my fond Golden Chersonese. Sadly, the once beautiful country, which could have been great, is in the grip of “thieves & cheats” at the helm . . . “pariahs & mafias” of the highest order from the so-called UMNOputras. This is positively my own perspective and does not in anyway reflect on the thoughts & standing of Mahanum.

With a “kris” in hand . . .

the ruling BN is ruining the land.

Its political policy is CCN – Corruption, Cronyism & Nepotism. (please don’t confuse it with CNN – the famed media channel).

May the good Lord bless Mahanum

And may God save Malaysia!

The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” ~Eleanor Roosevelt
