Cage Hongkees in Affluent Hong Kong

The tragedy of tens of thousands living in 6ft by 2ft rabbit hutches – in a city withmore Louis Vuitton shops than Paris

Hong Kong, one of the world’s richest cities, is abuzz with a luxury property boom that has seen homes exchanged for record sums.

But the wealth of the city has a darker side, with tens of thousands priced out of housing altogether and forced to live in the most degrading conditions.

These pictures by British photographer Brian Cassey capture the misery of people – some estimates put the figure as high as 100,000 – who are forced to live in cages measuring just 6ft by 2 1/2ft.

The city is one of the planet’s most densely packed metropolitan areas, with nearly 16,500 people living in every square mile of the territory.

Unscrupulous landlords are charging around US$200 a month for each cage, which are packed 20 to a room, and up to three levels high.

The lower cages are more expensive because you can almost stand inside them, but the conditions are no less squalid.

All this in a city with more Louis Vuitton shops than Paris.

Tai Lun Po, 79, has lived in the cage he is sitting in for an extraordinary 30 years

Eight-year-old Lee Ka Ying lives in a 6ft square ‘cubicle cage home’ with her mother

Tai Lun Po walks to the bathroom which he shares with the other residents

Occupants must share toilets and washing facilities, which are rudimentary. Many of the apartments have no kitchens, forcing their impoverished residents to spend there meagre incomes on takeaway food

The cage homes have been a running scandal in Hong Kong’s housing market for decades, yet rather than disappear, they are on the rise.

As the world economic crisis has lashed the city a former British territory whose economy is focused on financial services, more have been forced to turn to them for a place to stay.

The alternative is life on the streets

A building in Mongkok that houses cage people, sometimes squeezed twenty to a room

One cage dweller, Cheung, who lives in Sham Shui Po, told the Asia Times Online he endures appallingly cramped and fetid conditions.

‘The temperature inside the cages can be two to three degrees higher than what they are outside,’ he said.

‘It’s really uncomfortable, and sometimes I cannot sleep until after 5 in the morning.’

Cockroaches, wall lizards, lice and rats are common. ‘Sometimes I am worried if lizards or cockroaches will crawl into my ears at night,’ said Cheung.

Know Your Heart Killer!

Next to cancer, heart attack is just about the greatest killer!

A Kirkbyite colleague sent me this life & death information urging all recipients to forward & circulate in order to save lives; hence this publication.

Stroke has a new indicator!

They say if you e-mail this to ten people, you stand a chance of saving one life. Will you send this along? Blood Clots/Stroke – They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue.

Let your friends, near or far, know & click on this blog site for the vital information available.

STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters…..

S. T. R.

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall – she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) …she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Jane’s husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital – (at 6:00 PM Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don’t die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

It only takes a minute to read this.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke…totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense to remember the ‘3’ steps, STR. Read and

Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.

T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A

SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)

(I.e. It is sunny out today.)

R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency numberimmediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke ——– Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another ‘sign’ of a stroke is this: Ask the person to ‘stick’ out his tongue. If the tongue is

‘crooked’, if it goes to one side or the otherthat is also an indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

I have done my part. Will you?

Cure for Cancer Unveiled by Angela Zhang

It’s reported by CBS Evening News that a 17-year-old Angela Zhang unveiled an insanely amazing breakthrough–a revolutionary new way of treating cancer without making people sick in the process. Sounds like something out of a futuristic sci-fi book, but it’s real–Angela came up with the idea, built it, tested it and (according to all the experiments that have been done by her and other experts) found out that it works! Yes, there is a lot more testing that needs to happen before it can be used to treat people, but it’s still the most promising advance I’ve ever heard of.

CBS Evening News Video

It’s no wonder she won $100,000, a Science & Technology Prize, in a Siemens national science contest.

High school senior Angela Zhang, a typical American teenager, born to an immigrant Chinese family of Cupertino, California, has done research that could someday lead to a cure for cancer.

Zhang told ABC News, “I created a nanoparticle that’s kind of like the Swiss Army knife of cancer treatment in that it can detect cancer cells, eradicate the cancer cells and then monitor the treatment response.”

This is her proposed treatment: She mixes cancer medicine in a polymer that attaches to nanoparticles, which are then used to attach to cancer cells. Those nanoparticles can be detected on an MRI so doctors can see exactly where the tumors are.

She then thought that targeting the tumors with an infrared light would melt the polymers, release the medicine and kill the cancer cells — all while leaving the healthy cells intact. Et voila! It almost completely eradicated the tumors in mice.

It will be some years yet before the process will be known to work in humans, but the technique is original and promising on several levels.

As Tejal Desai, a bioengineer at the University of California, San Francisco, and a Siemens competition judge told MSNBC. “She showed great creativity and initiative in designing a nanoparticle system that can be triggered to release drugs at the site of the tumor while also allowing for noninvasive imaging.”

Remarkably, Zhang worked on her research in her spare time. In ninth grade, she began reading doctorate level papers on bio-engineering, and the following year, she convinced a Stanford lab to give her access. Her junior year, she began conducting her own research.

Of her future, Zhang, whose top college picks are Stanford and Harvard, says in the above interview, “I’m excited to learn just everything possible,” she said. “Everything in the sciences — biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, even computer science — to make new innovations possible.”

There is hope in the foreseeable future (as near as 15 years)

for cancer sufferers.

Such a dreaded disease will one day be just a Zodiac sign.

Joe & Mabel in happier times & at the hospital

Joseph (Joe), tall & 59 years young, works at the Post Office Distribution Centre, Perth International Airport, today lies at Shenton Park Rehabitation Centre where he was sent from, Royal Perth Hospital for life support & on-going medical care. He was struck down in knee-deep water while board surfing with his friend Mark at Mullaloo Beach, Perth, Western Australia on 10 December 2011.

Aussies generally love the sand, sun & surf.

It’s unbelievable that water can be both a friend & enemy without any forewarning. This surfing accident which happened in December 2011 is not the result of great tsunami waves but relatively calm water at 4 feet level. Joe in fact was making his way back to shore. But when Joe was still not back, his friend quickly turned around & found him floating face down.

Resuscitation was quickly administered while waiting for the ambulance. Joe was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital. The initial prognosis was not favourable & it came to as much as having to decide whether to pull off the life supporting device. He was in a coma initially. He has no sensation from the neck down.

Trusting in the Lord, and being good Christians, Mabel his wife & the rest of the family members strongly believe that God will heal Joe completely. God will make a way. God will make him whole.

Slowly, there has been some improvements. With insertion of trachea device, Joe could now eat, speak & even sing.

Video of Joe singing “Feelings”

Yes, Joe loves to sing. He has his first singing training as a choir boy when he was at the Seminary in Ipoh, Malaysia. In fact every Teoh family member is a good singer. Joe is a popular karaoke singer at social parties & charitable performances.

Things have been difficult for his wife Mabel. Virtually all hours she has been at his bedside. It’s hard for her coping with the situation. Let’s all of us think kindly & pray for a miracle for Joe, together with any possible assistance, which will be greatly appreciated.

Don Moen sings: “God Will Make A Way

We claim complete & wholesome healing in the wonderful & powerful Name of Jesus. AMEN.

LATEST UPDATE  (Month of September 2012)

Praise God! Joe has improved tremendously with the ability to raise his right hand, sit for longer stretch in his wheel chair, use his laptop computer, talk quite like normal & even sing!

He’s now at the Quadriplegic Centre, 10 Selby Street, Shenton Park WA 6008 – Ashburton Room 4

We claim complete healing in the name of Jesus! AMEN.

God’s Recall Notice

In the motor industry, we are most familiar with the question of vehicle recall. Much publicity is generated in the media over such expensive recall like Honda Australia on 30 March 2011 recalled more than 45,000 vehicles over an issue with the power steering hose that has the potential to start a fire under the bonnet. It could be for other problems relating to faulty brakes, electronic components, loose fasteners or faults with the potential to be a serious safety issue. No matter what costing millions to the prestige & image of the manufacturers, safety & security are held in foremost importance.

Wikipedia – Michelangelo‘s The Creation of Adam

Now what of problems related to mankind? In the light of the above, it’s interesting to note what God will do to protect you! Just think how much more important are humans compared to motor vehicles! I bet you will never have heard it presented in terms of modern technology such as this!

(Someone sent me this message below. The content of which is awesome! Source: Unknown)

The Maker of all human beings (GOD) is recalling all units manufactured, regardless of make or year, due to a serious defect in the primary and central component of the heart.

This is due to a malfunction in the original prototype units code named Adam and Eve, resulting in the reproduction of the same defect in all subsequent units.

This defect has been identified as “Subsequential Internal Non-morality,” more commonly known as S.I.N., as it is primarily expressed.

Some of the symptoms include:

1. Loss of direction

2. Foul vocal emissions

3. Amnesia of origin

4. Lack of peace and joy

5. Selfish or violent behaviour

6. Depression or confusion

7. Fearfulness

8. Idolatry

9. Rebellion

The Manufacturer, who is neither liable nor at fault for this defect, is providing factory-authorized repair and service free of charge to correct this defect.

The Repair Technician, JESUS, has most generously offered to bear the entire burden of the staggering cost of these repairs. There is no additional fee required.

The number to call for repair in all areas is: P-R-A-Y-E-R.

Once connected, please upload your burden of SIN through the REPENTANCE procedure.

Next, download ATONEMENT from the Repair Technician, Jesus, into the heart component.

No matter how big or small the SIN defect is, Jesus will replace it with:

1. Love

2. Joy

3. Peace

4. Patience

5. Kindness

6. Goodness

7. Faithfulness

8. Gentleness

9. Self control

Please see the operating manual, the B.I.B.L.E. (BEST Instructions Before Leaving Earth) for further details on the use of these fixes.

WARNING: Continuing to operate the human being unit without correction voids any manufacturer warranties, exposing the unit to dangers and problems too numerous to list, and will result in the human unit being permanently impounded. For free emergency service, call on Jesus.

DANGER: The human being units not responding to this recall action will have to be scrapped in the furnace. The SIN defect will not be permitted to enter Heaven so as to prevent contamination of that facility. Thank you for your attention!

– GOD

P.S. Please assist where possible by notifying others of this important recall notice, and you may contact the Father any time by ‘Knee mail’!

Because HE Lives!

God Bless you

Have a Blessed Day

The Amazing Life of Ants

Andrey Pavlov, Russian photographer, creates these marvelous macro photographs of ants living their life just as some rural dwellers.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

In many ways, ants can outwit, outlast, and outplay humans. Their complex, cooperative societies enable them to survive and thrive in conditions that would challenge the individual. Here are 10 fascinating facts about ants that just might convince you they’re superior to us.

Compared to the ants, if only man can work as hard there won’t be any worry about productive economy or democracy – for we just work for the Queen & the well-being of the community. If a man could run as fast for his size as an ant can he could run as fast as a racehorse.

Also, the average life expectancy of an ant is about 45-60 days. The ant has two eyes, each eye is made up of many smaller eyes and are called compound eyes.

There are over 10000 known species of ants. Each ant colony has at least one or more queens. The job of the Queen is to lay eggs which the worker ants look after. Worker ants are sterile, they look for food, look after the young and defend the nest from unwanted visitors.

Ants are clean and tidy insects. Some worker ants are given the job of taking out the rubbish from the nest and dumping them outside. Below are more amazing facts to fascinate you:

  1. Ants despite their diminutive size are capable of carrying objects 50 times their own body weight with their mandibles. If we had muscles in the same proportions as ants, we’d be able to heave a Hyundai over our heads!2.

  2. Soldier ants use their heads to plug the entrances to their nests and keep intruders from gaining access.
Recognition as belonging to the same colony is through touching their heads.

3. Certain ant species defend plants in exchange for food and shelter.

4. The total biomass of all the ants on Earth is roughly equal to the total biomass of all the people on Earth. Scientists estimate there are at least 1.5 million ants on the planet for every human being.

5. Ants sometimes herd or tend to insects of other species, like aphids or leafhoppers.
Ants will do just about anything to get the sugary secretions of sap-sucking insects, called honeydew so as to keep the sweet stuff in close supply.

6. Ants will enslave other ants, keeping them captive and making them do work for the colony.

7. Ants lived alongside the dinosaurs.
This is evidenced by the finding of fossils of ants, leading scientists to estimate the appearance of ants on Earth as somewhere around 130 million years ago.

8. Ants started farming long before humans. The earliest evidence suggests ants began farming as early as 70 million years ago, in the early Tertiary period. Even more amazing, these ants used sophisticated horticultural techniques to enhance their crop yields. They secreted chemicals with antibiotic properties to inhibit mold growth, and devised fertilisation protocols using manure.

9. Some ants form “super colonies,” massive communities of ants that can stretch for thousands of miles.
Each ant colony has a distinctive chemical profile that enables members of the group to recognise each other, and alerts the colony to the presence of strangers. Scientists recently discovered that massive super colonies in Europe, North America, and Japan all share the same chemical profile, meaning they are, in essence, a global super colony of ants.

10. Ants follow scent trails laid by scout ants to gather food.
By following pheromone trails created by other ants from the colony, foraging ants can gather and store food efficiently.

Islamisation of Australia?

 Alarming

The Root of What is Happening to America, Not Just America, but England, Europe, Canada & some other countries, if the politicians do not wake up and stick to being “politically correct”.

Scary, Unstoppable?

Our rights for safety & security, peace & harmony must be safeguarded. Politicians in the guise of democracy cannot afford to keep on playing the courtesy of diplomacy & being “religiously sensitive”.

Video below is a very telling lecture by Brigitte Gabriel, Founder of ACT For America, a journalist & a leading terrorism expert. It hits at the root of what is happening in American Universities, and what is happening to US culture. This fight is as real and costly as any combat America has been through in the past. The battlefield is non-conventional, but so are the methods of the enemies. Please take the time to listen to her addressing the anti-Sharia conference in Nashville. She could well be addressing similarly an Australian audience.

You should follow up and read her book “Because They Hate” A New York Times best seller.

This is very scary indeed. It could well happen on our own shore. Do we want a scenario as posed below by the these upheaving landscape?

To be forewarned is to be forearmed.

Austria – A Beautiful Country . . .

A white Alpine scene

It sends me back to the time of my college days of long hot summer roaming through a country like AustriaVienna’s jewel-box palaces and Mozart melodies, Strauss waltzes, sparkling Alps and problems like Maria naturally still have their place in Austria’s heart

Unlike Australia so dubbed as a “Cultural Desert”, Austria flaunts its heritage in exuberant style. Vienna’s bombastic Habsburg palaces and Salzburg’s baroque splendour are worthy, but dig deeper and you’ll unearth Stone Age settlements, Roman archaeological sites at Carnuntum and medieval festivals. In the country where Mozart composed and Strauss taught the world to twirl, you won’t need to search hard for culture – it waltzes right up to you.

The wide wide world of our Australian land pales in significance when compared to the small but richly endowed in beauty & culture like Austria.

This is a beautiful country, so peaceful & tranquil with music everywhere. Apart from its other beautiful cities like Innsbruck or Salzburg with all their charms, the real beauty of the country is to be found in the country area. Remember Maria (The Sound of Music) – the Austrian scene will definitely claim its place in your heart. Music also fills your ears as you you ride on horse-carts through Vienna Woods.

Have a peek at this slide presentation & relax as you plan to fly there for your next holiday.

Daddy, How Was I Born?

Sex education in the good old days often took the format of talking about the “Birds & the Bees”. In school we learnt about it without any greater interest, as the subject was treated technically & diagrammatically.

Modern dads are likely to teach sex education in keeping with cyberspace time . . . and this is so funny to resist my sharing.

A little boy goes to his father and asks “Daddy, how was I born?”

The father answers, “Well, I guess one day you will need to find out anyway! Your Mum and I first got together in a chat room on Yahoo. Then I set up a date via e-mail with your Mum and we met at a cyber-cafe. We sneaked into a secluded room, and googled each other. There your mother agreed to a download from my hard drive. As soon as I was ready to upload, we discoverted that neither one of us has used a firewall, and since it was too late to hit the Delete button, nine months later a little Pop-Up appeared that said:

How the Internet Got Started . . .

It’s interesting to trace the historical development of the Internet which is now consuming a great part of our daily life – socially, commercially, politically, militarily & just about every sphere. There are several versions of the story going around.

I find the Fabled Version both amusing & funny:

In ancient Israel , it came to pass that a trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a young wife by the name of Dot. And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg. Indeed, she was often called Amazon Dot Com.

And she said unto Abraham, her husband, “Why dost thou travel so far from town to town with thy goods when thou canst trade without ever leaving thy tent?”

And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load, but simply said, “How, dear?”

And Dot replied, “I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages saying what you have for sale, and they will reply telling you who hath the best price. And the sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah’s Pony Stable (UPS).”

Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. And the drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever having to move from his tent. To prevent neighbouring countries from overhearing what the drums were saying, Dot devised a system that only she and the drummers knew. It was known as Must Send Drum Over Sound (MSDOS), and she also developed a language to transmit ideas and pictures – Hebrew To The People (HTTP).

And the young men did take to Dot Com’s trading as doth the greedy horsefly take to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Sybarites, or NERDS.

And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums that no one noticed that the real riches were going to that enterprising drum dealer, Brother William of Gates, who bought off every drum maker in the land. And indeed did insist on drums to be made that would work only with Brother Gates’ drumheads and drumsticks.

And Dot did say, “Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others.” And Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel , or eBay as it came to be known. He said, “We need a name that reflects what we are.”

And Dot replied, “Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators.” “YAHOO,” said Abraham. And because it was Dot’s idea, they named it YAHOO Dot Com.

Abraham’s cousin, Joshua, being the young Gregarious Energetic Educated Kid (GEEK) that he was, soon started using Dot’s drums to locate things around the countryside. It soon became known as God’s Own Official Guide to Locating Everything (GOOGLE).

But the Real Story, which is all so technical & dry, is this:

The Internet started in 1962 as a project for the Department of Defense. Originally it was designed to allow remote control of nuclear weapons in the case that the city they were located in was destroyed. It was simply a network of computers that were spread throughout the country.

Research continued throughout the 60’s and into the 70’s when the first email program was developed. After this university researchers saw the value of this new form of communication. This led to the creation of a second, non military, network in 1984.

In 1990, http (HyperText transfer Protocol) was established. This allowed for more information to be transferred more efficiently over this now almost 30 year old computer network. Http was quickly followed by the actual creation of the World Wide Web and the release of a graphical interface (the first web browser). This development allowed the Internet to grow tremendously during the mid to late 90’s. The Internet was transformed from a research tool into the commercial virtual world we know today.
