The Peninsula Hong Kong

The Peninsula with its fleet of Rolls Royces

You might have been to the Ritz in London or

the Waldorf -Astoria in New York where the rich & famous haunt, The

Peninsula is a truly special hotel, dating back to the days

when few of us were born.

It’s opulent & has a class of its own unmatched by any comparison.

It’s legendary & the talk of the town.

This stately Peninsula, erected in 1928, the heyday of colonialism, has a charm and charisma to it that most other hotels would like to bottle and buy. The building itself is recognized as one of the best in Hong Kong and has found its way onto many tourist itineraries. The Peninsula is arguably the height of hotel luxury in the city. Spacious and tasteful suites are designed with Victorian granduer in mind and  have lost little of their stately appeal. Be sure to ask for a room in the original building, otherwise you may be stored in the somewhat lackluster new towers.

It has been the playground of governors and mandarins, diplomats and powerbrokers for over a century. The place to stay and been seen to stay for anyone eager to impress. For many people it’s still the only address in town worth talking about.

As a five star lap of luxury property the Peninsula still lives up to its legend – this is after all the home to more the world’s largest fleet of Rolls Royces – yet it’s fair to say that the Peninsula Hong Kong has been edged out as the most luxurious stay in town by competitors – the Four Seasons is a particular stand out. If you’re looking for titanic-sized hot tub bathtubs and the most TV channels as well as all the other bells and whistles attached to luxury hotels – you can arguably find it done with a little more finesse for a little bit less money elsewhere in Hong Kong. But that shouldn’t stop you booking in.

This is more than a hotel stay. The Peninsula Hong Kong has what’s often lacking at a five star – character – and bags of it; the history and stately surroundings make for a truly special stay. In a city that often ignores – or bulldozes its history – this is a step back into a city and a style long lost. It’s a true experience.

This is a truly special hotel. Like the Ritz in London and the Waldorf Astoria in New York, the Peninsula is synonymous with Hong Kong – a landmark that has stood for much of the city’s short history. It was here that British governors held their opulent balls and where the British would surrender to the Japanese in World War Two. In recent years the hotel has not only featured between the pages of Conde Naste and National Geographic but as a city icon in Bond and Batman films.

It’s fair to say that other Hong Kong hotels have edged the Peninsula for luxury – particularly with modern touches such as iPod docks and even telescopes – but for pure class – the Peninsula Hong Kong remains in a league of its own. From the marble gilded lobby and string quartet that accompanies high tea to the fleet of Rolls Royces that can be used for airport transfers there is a turn of the century charm that makes you want to don top coat and tails.

The hotels’ façade is still the 1920s’ original – new 30 storey tower addition aside – and the interiors still strive to tell the tale of the roaring twenties. Stylish rooms retain their classical elegance with high ceilings, marble bathrooms and polished wood furnishings, with modern fixtures, such as 42 inch flatscreen TVs and in room safes – sympathetically included into the decor. The inclusion of a sofa or armchair in each room adds an extra bit of home comfort to any stay.

While the rooms are universally impressive, there are a lot of different grades of room on offer and what you get for your money does vary. This is not only your basic difference between your standard rooms and swankier suites but there is the Hong Kong difference between harbour views, street views and…at the Pen, courtyard views. More importantly is the difference between stays in the original hotel and the new 30 storey tower now bolted on top. Built in 1994, every effort has been made to build the tower true to the original design– and the rooms are almost carbon copies – but it’s just not the same.

The Peninsula can boast an ESPA spa, a rooftop fitness centre fitted out with state of the art equipment and personal trainers and a Roman inspired pool. There are even helipad and Rolls Royce transfers on offer – all for an extra wad of cash. Many want to know if the Peninsula Hong Kong has the best facilities in town. In a city flush with five stars constantly striving to out do each other it’s hard to say. Are there better facilities on offer at other Hong Kong hotels?

The Peninsula is home to some of the best restaurants in the city. These include the starched white table clothes of Gaddi’s, a neo classical dining room that has been considered the city’s best spot for French haute-cuisine since opening in 1953 – a lifetime in Hong Kong restaurant terms. It’s also an entrant into the Hong Kong Michelin Guide and perhaps the last restaurant in Hong Kong to require a jacket for dinner.

The Peninsula’s other award winning restaurant is Felix – a complete departure in both style and atmosphere.

The highlight of any stay is – in the lobby. Set amongst the gilded columns and marble floors, drinking earl grey tea and eating finger sandwiches and cream cakes while being serenaded by a string quartet is a must try experience.

Just try it even if you could not afford the luxury of staying at the Peninsula!

World’s Largest Underground Express Rail Station

West Kowloon Sky

The Express Rail Link West Kowloon Terminus, built to connect Hong Kong to Beijing, is said to become the world’s largest underground high-speed rail station.

Image

This stunning modern concept was designed by Andrew Bromberg of international architecture studio Aedas and its completion is programmed for 2015. In three years time, the huge 4,628,481 square feet (430,000 square meters) contemporary terminal in central Hong Kong will be prepared with 15 tracks for high-speed trains reaching maximum speeds of 124 mph.

This dazzling terminal is an example of how far technology and architecture have come together, forming part of the greater Pearl River Delta greater development of super infrastructure of high-speed trains, super highways & freeways, one megametropolis of nine major regional cities with ease & speed of communting – a feat that none the world will ever see.

 ImageImageImageImageImageImage

Starting with the first impression, this undulating building will change the city’s face promising to proudly display Hong Kong’s bold and vanguard character. Rising 148 feet high above the surroundings, the structure’s roof line acts as dynamic-shaped pedestrian trails alongside green spaces. This park/terminal hybrid fabricates a promised view of the future we can’t wait to see it finished and on-line.

Above ground, the terminal’s exterior architecture is quite exquisite. The outside ground plane bends down to the hall and the roof structure above gestures toward the harbour. The result is a 148 ft high volume which focuses all attention to the south façade with views of the Hong Kong Central skyline, Victoria Peak and beyond. Much of the station’s roof is actually green so pedestrian can cross over the top, making it seem more like a park than a train station.

When the West Kowloon Cultural precinct was reclaimed & development, there was much speculation. Now pieces of puzzle are in place & this is truly going to be something spectacular.

‪Hollywood Walk of Fame

Where the Stars are Immortalized

YouTube Video

Classic Americana from 1987. Forgotten TV star, Clayton Moore aka The Lone Ranger finally gets his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Disney had bought the rights to the Masked Man and would not allow the real Lone Ranger to don his famous mask at the ceremony. (YouTube)

The Hollywood Walk of Fame consists of more than 2,400 five-pointed terrazzo and brass stars embedded in the sidewalks along fifteen blocks of Hollywood Boulevard and three blocks of Vine Street in Hollywood, California. The stars are permanent public monuments to achievement in the entertainment industry, bearing the names of a mix of actors, musicians, directors, producers, musical and theatrical groups, fictional characters, and others. The Walk of Fame is administered by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and maintained by the self-financing Hollywood Historic Trust. It is a popular tourist destination, with a reported 10 million visitors in 2003. (Wikipedia)

Like all visitors to Hollywood, we found ourselves eagerly strolling along

Hollywood Boulevard & trigger-happy with our digital camera & video. We

found some of our own Aussie stars like Russell Crowe & Cate Blanchett. Of

course, it was not possible to photograph all our favourite stars.

The Hollywood Sign

Signs are designed to signal directions

They’re also able to instil inspiration

As well as hope, dream & aspiration

Ever since I was a school projectionist for our cinema club, I was fascinated & captivated by the word “Hollywood”.

One of my travel dream destinations is to see the Hollywood sign in all of its glory perched high on top of

Mount Lee in Los Angeles, little realising that in 1923, a Los Angeles real estate group first unveiled it as a massive billboard to promote their new “Hollywoodland” development. Little did they know too that their brash operation has come to remain such a lasting significant Sign.

So the Sign from “Hollywoodland” became known as just “Hollywood”.

The Hollywood Sign is a landmark and American cultural icon located in Los Angeles, California. It is situated on Mount Lee in the Hollywood Hills area of the Santa Monica Mountains. (Wikipedia)

It’s more than just nine white letters spelling out a city’s name; it’s one of the world’s most evocative symbols – a universal metaphor for ambition, success, glamour…for this dazzling place, industry and dream we call

H-O-L-L-Y-W-O-O-D

Although the Sign’s appearance and purpose have evolved over the years, its basic aspirational message remains the same: This is a place where magic is possible, where dreams can come true.

The Sign seen from the farmers market in Los Angeles

For many visitors to Los Angeles, there is no more coveted photo than a shot of the world famous Sign. Though it is visible from all over the city from its lofty perch on Mt. Lee, it can actually be surprisingly difficult to get a well angled shot. Many are surprised to learn that it’s actually illegal to hike to (or basically get anywhere near) the Sign, which is set well back behind restricting gates and protected by security cameras and Park Rangers.

Disneyland – Where Dreams Come True

To all who come to this happy place: Welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here age relives fond memories of the past, and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams, and the hard facts that have created America, with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.” – (Wikipedia)

Walter E. Disney, July 17, 1955, 4:43pm

Disneyland Park is a theme park located in Anaheim, California, owned and operated by the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts division of The Walt Disney Company. Dedicated on July 17, 1955, and still almost universally referred to by that name, it is the only theme park designed and built under the direct supervision of Walt Disney.

There are other theme parks at Orlando, Florida & Paris. Hong Kong in China has one too & plans are afoot to build one in Shanghai.

We stayed at Howard Johnson Fullerton, Los Angeles during the recent summer of 2012. It was convenient for us to get to Disneyland by the free hotel shuttle provided with frequent departure & pick-up times.

Disneyland has attracted millions of tourists enchanted by the wonder of this magical fantastical world – Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Adventureland, Frontierland & Mickey’s Toontown. If you are an adrenaline junkie, you’ll be thrilled with the adventurous rides of the Splash Mountain, Haunted Mansion, Matterhorn Bobsleds, Space Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean & Indiana Jones.

When you are there, you must not miss the highlights of the daily dressed parade of all the favourite cartoon figures such as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and other Disney cartoons & princesses accompanied by great familiar Disney music. Be prepared to stay on till nightfall when the whole Disney world gets lighted with fireworks to be remembered.

Niagara Falls

“Maid of the Mist” Boat . . . See the rainbow!

Niagara Falls is one of those MUST SEE sights when travelling to US and Canada – a natural wonder of the world. What you conjured in your mind or imagined from all the geography lessons of old, travel journals, pictures or videos cannot match the actual experience of your being there physically. It is awesome, breathtaking, magnificent, magical, majestic, stupendous, spectacular or if there’s any other word or adjective that I might describe it better.

YOU SIMPLY GOT TO BE THERE TO SEE IT FOR YOURSELF.

IT WOULD BE A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE – NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN!

Niagara Falls is the collective name for three waterfalls that straddle the international border between the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of New York. From largest to smallest, the three waterfalls are the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls, forming the southern end of the Niagara Gorge.

More than 6 million cubic feet (168,000 m3) of water falls over the crest line every minute in high flow, and almost 4 million cubic feet (110,000 m3) on average.

You can take as many pictures or videos from the look-out point. But really to get the thrills & spills and being close to the falls, you must get on the “Maid of the Mist” boat. You will cruise close to the falls dressed with a thin blue rain-coat to prevent you from getting wet.

You can’t begin to imagine the roar & force of nature, the perpetual mist, splash & spray, often enhanced by the appearance of rainbow. It’s raising up your adrenaline level . . . you can’t stand or sit still!

For the romantics, you can lunch & dine in style from the Skylon Tower while taking in the breathless scene of the Horseshoe Falls in all its splendour. In fact, there are a host of other top restaurants offering both tempting menus & sights.

God’s greatness is everywhere!

Grand Canyon Skywalk

This topic should have been included in the previous article of “Towering Tour of US & Canada 2012”. However, its exceptional features deserve a place of special mention & description here.

The Grand Canyon Skywalk, a transparent glass horseshoe-shaped cantilever bridge and tourist attraction in Arizona near the Colorado River on the edge of a side canyon in the Grand Canyon West area of the main canyon, the Skywalk has been described as an engineering first.

  • Juts out about 70 feet into the canyon, 4000 ft above the Colorado River, twice as high as any skyscraper

  • Will accommodate 120 people comfortably (The question is how comfortable would YOU be?)

  • Built with more than a million pounds of steel beams and includes dampeners that minimize the structure’s vibration

  • Designed to hold 72 millions pounds, it can withstand an 8.0 magnitude earthquake 50 miles away, and winds in excess of 100 mph.

  • Has a glass bottom and sides . . . four inches thick. For those weak of hearts, they can walk on the two opaque sides of the glass bridge

Modern technology has brought this aged-old wonder of the world to the modern era. The avenues of sight-seeing by trail-hiking is still there and twin-engine plane or helicopter rides to get more vintage views and even cruising or rafting on the Colorado River below.

Construction of the Skywalk began in March 2004 – and was opened to the public on 28 March 2007 with 120 people allowed on the platform at any one time.

Visitors will have to pay $25 (around £13) to use the gangway, on top of the fee for entering the national park. Grand Canyon West is privately owned and operated by the Hualapai Tribe and requires the purchase of a permit and Legacy tour package for entry. No cameras & personal belongings are allowed

These photos are largely obtained from the internet.

Towering Tour of US & Canada 2012

From our first experience of the Eiffel Tower in Paris in our student’s days, we have added in our life’s journey a list of other world famous towers . In Taipei is the 101 Tower, Pudong TV Tower in Shanghai, Pernas Twin Towers of Malaysia and in Auckland Sky Tower where we first experienced the glass platform beneath our feet in viewing down below.

In our recent Summer holidays (July/August 2012 of US & Canada, we have collectively been to the Empire State Building in New York, CN Tower Toronto, Montreal Olympic Tower, The Skylon Tower in Niagara Falls and Strastosphere Casino Hotel Tower in Las Vegas, unrivaled for its top amenities & expansive views, where we stayed for a couple of nights with free access to its tower.

Strastosphere Casino & Hotel Tower, Las Vegas

Las Vegas is full of hotels & casinos with the most exotic & amazing architectural feats. With modern technology, it may seem unbelievable to have extraordinary thrills & spills of rollercoaster, fun rides or simulated gravitational rides – all to fire your wildest imagination.

Niagara Falls Skylon Tower, Canada

The Skylon Tower, in Niagara Falls, Ontario, is an observation tower that overlooks both the American Falls, New York and the larger Horseshoe Falls, Ontario from the Canadian side of the Niagara River. There the world-famous Revolving Dining Restaurant affords you a 360 degree view of the Niagara Falls once each hour in all its splendour. At the height of dining excellence award-winning continental cuisine is presented at 775 feet above the Falls. For lunch or dinner the menu is rivalled only by the spectacular view. Whether you come for a romantic Niagara dinner for two, a special celebration or just a family vacation this Niagara Falls restaurant promises the ultimate relaxation in Fallsview dining.

The Empire State Building is a 102-story skyscraper located in New York City at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street. It has a roof height of 1,250 feet (381 meters), and with its antenna spire included, it stands a total of 1,454ft (443.2 m) high.[6] Its name is derived from the nickname for New York, the Empire State. It stood as the world’s tallest building for 40 years.

CN Tower, Toronto

The CN Tower is a communications and observation tower in DowntownToronto, Ontario, Canada. Standing 553.33 metres (1,815.4ft) tall, it was completed in 1976, becoming the world’s tallest free-standing structure and world’s tallest tower at the time. It held both records for 34 years until the completion of Burj Khalifa and Canton Tower in 2010 and Tokyo Skytree in 2012. It remains the tallest free-standing structure in the Western Hemisphere, a signature icon of Toronto’s skyline, and a symbol of Canada, attracting more than two million international visitors annually.

Montreal Olympic Tower

Montreal Olympic Tower is unique & worth a mention. The Montreal Tower is the highest inclined tower in the world at 165 metres high and has a 45 degree angle. In comparison, the tower of Pisa is only five degrees! Getting to the top is also a unique adventure, as up to 76 passengers can board the 2 level glass encased funicular. It is also the only one in the world that works on a curbed structure; a hydraulic system that allows the cabin to remain horizontal during the two minute rise to the top.

The Chinese have a saying that there’s always a higher mountain to climb. You just can’t climb them all. There are nations, not to be undone for national pride & prestige, coming up with even greater challenges. Take Burj Khalifa in Dubai for example . . . it’s possibly about the tallest structure in the world that’s freely standing at the present. It’s even got provisions to go higher should there be any future contender.

We would have loved to be right on top of the Statue of Liberty, but because of time constraint, have to content ourselves with the Hudson River cruise and view it from afar.

Camouflaged Village in Afghanistan

At the bottom of the sandstone slope is a village, looking very much like the natural cliffs at the top of the picture.

This is really unbelievable! You would never know this is a village looking down from above!

The best natural camouflage ever!!! Amazing nature’s camouflage!

Can you believe it??

Environmentally friendly

Cave dwellings that blend absolutely with the environment.

Long lasting & maintenance free.

Militarily, it’s excellent natural defence.

No cause for alarm even with the most sophisticated modern weapons.

And you wonder why they couldn’t find Osama
