This is the author’s related project which own website isn’t up & running yet. Hence, this special introduction. In line with the author’s philosophy whose writing has a global following of well over 600,000 at this point in time, he’s now putting words to action in making a better habitation out of this dreadful world.

In a world dominated by the rich & powerful, GREED is the name of the game under the guise of democracy. Globalisation is just an alternative to sheer exploitation & domination. There is no consideration of co-operation. In the old days, the colonial masters would “drain” their colonies dry, enriching their motherlands & leaving the colonies undeveloped or underdeveloped. The concept of master & slaves in practice indeed.

In the modern era, democracy & globalisation are repeating the same performance in exploiting the poor. First divide & rule, drain the resources, then pull out leaving the colonies in shambles – economically & politically. Colonisation has turned on to imperialism.

The game of GREED can be played & replayed in various forms. From WallStreet to Main Street or Mean Street, manipulation & exploitation are ever present, though artfully camouflaged with plausible sales pitch & all sorts of justification & rationalisation.

The rich get richer & more powerful with the super power trying to attain absolute power. Pray that the innate ferocity of the hungry tiger will not rear its ugly head. The worst may yet to come before we see better days ahead, and that would be treacherous!

Touching Story: How Would The Elephants Know?

Lawrence Anthony

Elephants have been known to have unforgettable memory. So the saying goes “elephant memory”. But this is one touching story with a tremendous difference. It is definitely God‘s grand design that accounts for the event that unfolded. Is it animal’s instinct or God’s intervention?

The elephant’ journey from their habitat to pay respect to their rescuer & friend who passed away suddenly. How did they know? They observed the vigil & even fasted. Remember these are wild elephants.

Lawrence Anthony, a legend in South Africa and author of 3 books including the bestseller, “The Elephant Whisperer,” bravely rescued wildlife and rehabilitated elephants all over the globe from human atrocities, including the courageous rescue of Baghdad Zoo animals during US invasion in 2003.

On March 7, 2012, Lawrence Anthony died.

He is remembered and missed by his wife, 2 sons, 2 grandsons and numerous elephants. Two days after his passing, the wild elephants showed up at his home led by two large matriarchs. Separate wild herds arrived in droves to say goodbye to their beloved man-friend.

A total of 31 elephants had patiently walked over 12 miles to get to his South African house.

Elephant Herd

Witnessing this spectacle, humans were obviously in awe, not only because of the supreme intelligence and precise timing that these elephants sensed about Lawrence ‘S passing, but also because of the profound memory and emotion the beloved animals evoked in such an organized way.

Walking slowly – for days – making their way in a solemn one-by-one queue from their habitat to his house.

So, how after Anthony’s death, did the reserve’s elephants — grazing miles away, in distant parts of the park — know? “A good man died suddenly,” says Rabbi Leila Gal Berner, Ph.D., “and from miles and miles away, two herds of elephants, sensing that they had lost a beloved human friend, moved in a solemn, almost ‘funereal’ procession to make a call on the bereaved family at the deceased man’s home.”

If there ever was a time when we can truly sense the wondrous ‘interconnectedness of all beings, it is when we reflect on the elephants of Thula Thula.” A man’s heart stops, and hundreds of elephants’ hearts are grieving. This man’s oh-so-abundantly loving heart offered healing to these elephants, and now, they came to pay loving homage to their friend.”

Lawrence’s wife, Francoise, was especially touched, knowing that the elephants had not been to his house prior to that day for well over 3 years!  But yet they knew where they were going. The elephants obviously wanted to pay their deep respects, honoring their friend who’d saved their lives – so much respect that they stayed for 2 days and 2 nights without eating anything. Then one morning, they left, making their long journey back!

There are things in this world which we may never know & understand. Call it mystery if you like.

So This Is Christmas . . .

3796264-vector-illustration-of-fantasy-shapes-for-christmas-celebration

The year slipped by so fast

That it’s Christmas time again

What does Christmas mean?

Is it plainly a holiday

When gifts flood the day?

Or is it much more significant

Than all the commercials chant?

Today thee’s a new Christmas song in the air telling us what Christmas is all about. The song says it all and it’s so beautifully sung by the American Christian Life United (ACLU) Choir, making “Say Merry Christmas” the greatest Christmas song of all times.

YouTube Video Presentation

<iframe width=”640″ height=”360″ src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/ln01p1M2cH0&#8243; frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen>

On my part, I have written a poem in 1992 expressing & concurring exactly with this new Christmas song:

Christmas

This is the day that the Lord hath made & the season too

Let us rejoice & be in it to the full.

Christmas is a season of cheers

And there’s every reason to steer

Our hearts & love to the Lord

God‘s only beloved Son to adore.

Christmas is a season of loving & giving

In our hearts much forgiving & forgetting

Loving without reservation

And giving without compensation.

Christmas is a season of rejoicing

Rejoicing in our Lord’s coming

We sharer joy with the unjoyful

We share gifts with the needful.

Christmas is for one & all

Without exception we should call

And shout to the world at large

To heed, change & our spirit to charge.

A Tale of Two Seas

Ancient Map of Israel

There are merits in giving
But demerits in just taking!

You’ve read the classic Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, but have you heard of A Tale of Two Seas? I am referring to the Dead Sea & the Sea of Galilee . . . both of Biblical & contrasting significance & whereby we can learn a thing or two about life.

The source of this story is not known to me, but I have heard it a long time ago. It’s so worthwhile that I like to share it with you here:

As you probably recall, the Dead Sea is really a Lake, not a sea. It’s so high in salt content that human body can float easily. You can almost lie down and read a book! The salt in the Dead Sea is as high as 35% – almost 10 times the normal ocean water. And all that saltiness has meant that there is no life at all in the Dead Sea. No fish. No vegetation. No sea animals. Nothing lives in the Dead sea.

And hence the name: Dead Sea.

While the Dead Sea has remained etched in my memory, I don’t seem to recall learning about the Sea of Galilee in my school Geography lesson. So when I heard about the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea and the tale of the two seas – I was intrigued. Turns out that the Sea of Galilee is just north of the Dead Sea. Both the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea receive their water from river Jordan. And yet, they are very, very different.

Unlike the Dead Sea, the Sea of Galilee is pretty, resplendent with rich, colourful marine life. There are lots of plants. And lots of fish too. In fact, the sea of Galilee is home to over twenty different types of fishes.

Same region, same source of water, and yet while one sea is full of life, the other is dead. How come?

Here apparently is why. The River Jordan flows into the Sea of Galilee and then flows out. The water simply passes through the Sea of Galilee in and then out – and that keeps the Sea healthy and vibrant, teeming with marine life.

But the Dead Sea is so far below the mean sea level, that it has no outlet. The water flows in from the river Jordan, but does not flow out. There are no outlet streams. It is estimated that over a million tons of water evaporate from the Dead Sea every day. Leaving it salty. Too full of minerals. And unfit for any marine life.

The Dead Sea takes water from the River Jordan, and holds it. It does not give. Result? No life at all.

Think about it.

Life is not just about getting. Its about giving. We all need to be a bit like the Sea of Galilee.

We are fortunate to get wealth, knowledge, love and respect. But if we don’t learn to give, we could all end up like the Dead Sea. The love and the respect, the wealth and the knowledge could all evaporate like the water in the Dead Sea.

If we get the Dead Sea mentality of merely taking in more water, more money, more everything the results can be disastrous. Good idea to make sure that in the sea of your own life, you have outlets. Many outlets. For love and wealth – and everything else that you get in your life. Make sure you don’t just get, you give too. Open the taps. And you’ll open the floodgates to happiness.

Make that a habit. To share. To give.
And experience life.

In Vietnam, the fruit is taken fresh & used as a healthy fruit drink.

The jujube fruits can be eaten fresh or dried. They are available in either red or black, with the latter being smoked to enhance flavor. They are used in Chinese and Korean traditional medicine. Dried fruits are usually used in Chinese delicacies, tea, or sweetened tea syrup.

The most common health benefits of the Jujube fruit:

Similarly, several known digestive complaints can be treated effectively by Jujube fruit including loss of appetite and diarrhoea because it destroys bacteria in the intestines. In fact, the Chinese use it in the treatment of hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver simply because Jujube fruit is known to strengthen the liver. It also serves another purpose by aiding the spleens daily function ensuring that the health benefits of Jujube fruit are used to their full potential.

As well as assisting with many bodily functions, Jujube fruit is known to help mental health conditions by having an overall calming effect, when ingested. Therefore irritable, nervous people can take advantage of the health benefits of Jujube fruit. Further benefits include increased stamina and strength, increased energy levels, improvement to the metabolism and a reduction in allergies.

The high content of botulinus acid found in Jujube fruit is being used in experiments aiding modern medical research in the quest to find cures for cancer, leukaemia and HIV. In addition, K562 leukaemia cells in the body have been proven to be reduced by extracts from Jujube fruit which again verifies the health benefits of Jujube fruit.

All in all, the Jujube fruit is an invaluable natural source, one that will probably continue to be in use for many years to come.

Our Lawn Is Forever Lush & Green

Our lawn is forever lush & green

Come spring, summer, winter or fall

It fills our eyes & beckons us with its call

Beholding it as though it’s always spring!

The green is lush, fresh & beautiful to behold . . . changing not with the seasons. It’s tolerant of heat & rain without pain of due care & attention. It’s virtually free of maintenance, saving you both energy & water, fertilisers or mowing. No need to worry about winter weeds or fighting against its vigorous summer growth. In fact, it remains perpetually young & beautiful . . . could be that longevity & perpetual youth are not impossible after all!

Let’s hear directly from the horse’s mouth:

Unlike the well-known variety of Winter Green, Santa Ana, Kikuyu or Matilda Buffalo which take years to establish with lots of care & attention, you can install & establish me virtually over night. Like your faithful mate, I will stay that way for years to come giving you much joy & pleasure. No betrayal, no let down, just how reliable can I be.

Shade or sun I remain consistent giving you fun. Apart from its tolerance of heat & shade, water or drought, I feature less so even with wear & tear.

Just don’t be unduly upset when the team of workmen comes to establish me on your ground. They come with the machinery & equipment, bobcat & compactor, loads of cracker dust with me in two rolled up format in the trailer. They dIg up the ground, level it, remove all unwanted rocks or stones, fill the ground up with cracker dust, level it & compact the ground upon which I shall lay for years to come.  Your heart might ache when your rose plants have to be relocated. It’s like blowing up a dust storm before calm sets in.

Slowly & surely I make my appearance & with a twinkle I am established with landscaping & lots of black mulch for the roses & plants to further enhance my good looks.

When you think of the years ahead that you’ll be enjoying the pleasure of such a mate, the cost of establishing me as your front lawn or backyard, or as putting green becomes a very affordable project. My young neighbour looked over the fence & said, “I’m beginning to get sick cutting the lawn.”

When thinking of going my way in installing your everlasting green front lawn, go for Westregent Pty Ltd & rest assured of qualitative & quantitative service. Before engaging them, I rang up 4 or 5 other companies for quotes. All promised to come to my place to measure up the requirements & to give me their prices. Only one showed up, took the measurement & promised to call back with the quote the very next day. He never did. I rang up the manager who told me that his man was unwell & would personally look into the matter. I waited for a service that never materialised. A satisfied customer is your best advertisement!.

They came highly recommended by my friend Max.

Be Creative & Innovative to be Productive

English: Roadside billboard of Deng Xiaoping i...

English: Roadside billboard of Deng Xiaoping in Lijiang (Yunnan) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Winston Churchill in Downing Street giving his...

People are generally negative & restrictive

They fall into the “existence trap”

Existing with the world flashing by

Without as though a worry & care.

Dead as a door nail

Rotting away with the gale

The weather & wind perform their parts

Till time sets all apart!

Without initiative & drive, the world will drift you by. You’ve got to be alert to catch up with the time which is fast speeding by. Miss the train you’ll be in pain . . . finding yourself lagging behind. The proverbial truth that the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step bears out clearly to you. So take the initiative & move on.

Besides changes are refreshing. It’s exhilarating & exciting. When you live your life out with emotion, excitement & enthusiasm, you’d find life worth the living . . . under any circumstances. This is YOU ruling the circumstances rather than the reverse . . . you’ve got to put yourself in the driver’s seat. Chart the course & navigate the way.

If you aim high & miss the sky, at least you’re landing midway high! It’s obvious that you’ve got to do something to achieve something, doing nothing means getting nothing at all.

In the old days, people were more “sedentary”, staying put in one place. Unlike the present era, people are constantly on the move. They are internationally mobile with their first class credentials & academic qualifications, seeking jobs & opportunities globally. Salesmen too are not confined to restrictive territories & boundaries. They are flying here & there & everywhere! Life as a whole is different.

When you’re old & retired, life takes on a different plane of excitement. Who says retirement is for the rest of your natural life? If you stayed retired & do nothing, you’re gonna meet St Perter in the Pearly Gate sooner than expected.

Creativeness & innovativeness do not stop chronologically. Your brain cells must be nourished & kept afresh all the time. Stimulation keeps you young mentally. Sir Winston Churchill & Deng Xiaoping were both old but not feeble . . . achieving greatness only in the later years of their lives. A living testimony is in the person of Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore or Prof. Wang Gangwu (privileged to have him as my former university lecturer) in the academic field.

Change should not be for the sake of change. Change must always be for the better. Often it involves some calculated risks. But remember nothing venture nothing gain.

Change needs to come from “within” not from “without”. Politicians always promise heaven & earth which they are never able to fulfil. President Obama is typically the best example.

Be not afraid of changes. Take them in their strides. Be courageous even when angels fear to tread. Take the calculated risks . . . to dream & build, to conceive & believe, to strike & to be bold, to stand tall & be counted . . . and in the end to stand proudly & declare unto the world saying: “THIS I HAVE DONE”!

Songs That Inspire . . . Influence Generations

Bengawan Solo River in Indonesia

As a little boy in school those days, we had singing lessons & a song book entitled “Sing & Be Happy”. Somehow, my singing teacher didn’t like me, kept discouraging me to sing saying that I had a croaky voice. Nevertheless, where love exists desire persists! Though I am never good at it, music & songs fill my life . . . make me as happy as can be!

I was born in Malaysia, brought up there, had my schooling there, sent on a government scholarship for teacher training in UK & then furthering my tertiary education at the University of Malaya, Pantai Valley, Selangor. That’s how it was . . . down memory lane in Malaysia . . . no political divide, no racial strife, tension or envy, peaceful & harmonious living . . . a land known invariably as “The Golden Chersonese”, where music flow & songs galore!

Songs have no cultural or political overtone attached. Music as such is a universal language. There is but one tongue . . . the musical tongue. Songs like “Rasa Sayang” & “Bengawan Solo” have always inspired listeners the world over. The other day, I was with some Aussie friends chatting & having a bit of wine. John who owns 6 bands related to me that when his band was playing in Penang, Malaysia, he learnt to play and sing that ever popular request “Rasa Sayang”. He just loves it! The favour of the song will always live on.

Another song that comes to mind is “Bengawan Solo.” When teaching in Kelantan, North East Malaysia, I remember Zainab a Malay student of mine who rendered this song beautifully. I learnt it then & I sing it even now. In most karaoke parties I have organised, “Bengawan Solo” never failed to show.

There’re various translations to this song . . . English, Filipino, Burmese & others.

Teresa Teng

Teresa Teng (Deng Lijun) the ever popular nightingale from Taiwan, sadly passed away at the age of 42 in the year 1995. She captured the hearts of men & women all over the world with her songs. There was a saying then “The day is dominated by Deng Xiaoping, but the night belongs to Deng Lijun”.

Deng Xiaoping

Deng Xiaoping (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Any karaoke fan would love “Tian Mi Mi” and “Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin” (The Moon Represents My Heart) as sung by Teresa Teng. My former HSC student Kat sings it beautifully in Mandarin . . . & she is Malay! My own wife Lilian sings the English translation version. However, it’s hard to get her to render it in public except small karaoke party. She sings well but fights shy of public swell!

Now let’s hear a delightful group of African boys singing ‘Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin” in Mandarin:

Incidentally, best way of learning a language is through the song in that langusage.

And lest we forget the memory of Deng Lijun (Teresa Teng), who has been commemorated in a public garden park in Taipei, Taiwan, let’s listen to her melodious captivating voice:
