Living An Abundant Life . . . Be Debt-Free

He who works his land will have abundant food . . . “ Proverbs 12:11

Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse does not come to rest.” (Prov. 26:2).

Whatever you send into the Universe comes back. To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

You’ll reap whatever you sow. Say good things to everyone; treat everyone with total respect and it will all come back. Never worry about what you are going to get, just concentrate on what you can give.

Understanding the Natural Law of Cause & Effect & obeying it will ensure financial freedom & avoid the pitfalls of financial ruin. It’s so simple & yet so difficult.

Most people live their entire existence completely unaware of why things either “go right” or “go wrong.” They seem unable to grasp that what they do, or do not do, has a direct effect on their lives. Most do not recognise that for every cause there is an effect – or, conversely, for every effect there is a cause. Nor do they know that this is a law. Scientists recognise this in physics, but society is unaware that the same is true in life – that the law of cause and effect is no less immutable than any law of science.

The Bible, God’s Instruction Manual for mankind, contains many practical, helpful points about finances. God created laws to govern every aspect of His Creation, but most do not understand that these laws therefore govern every action in life. The law of cause and effect – where actions always bring reactions – applies to finances. There is a way – a direct path – to financial freedom.

Realise that God will not force anyone to follow His ways. Yet obeying Him leads to blessings and happiness – disobedience leads to misery and unhappiness.


Impulsive spending is the by-product of a generation lacking in strength and character and is the cause behind why so many are now buried under a mountain of debt. You can’t spend money which you don’t have nor can you go on spending as though there’s no tomorrow. Payments of debts are inevitable.

Using credit to purchase luxury items and a near-universal obsession to obtain material goods fuel the mounting crisis. The present generation is very different from those of the past. Many, in fact most, now live solely for pleasure, comfort, gain and entertainment. Personal responsibility and character-building have almost disappeared.

You do not have to become another statistic in the global financial meltdown. Choose to follow God’s fiscal laws and take the first steps to living an abundant, debt-free life!

Jesus explained in John 10:1, “ . . . I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.” AMEN.

Let’s not be impulsive or obsessive

Nor be greedy & possessive

Restraint & abstain

For a life without pain.

Abundant Life does not mean having the Fed Reserve

either keep on printing more money or creating it out of thin air!

AUSTERITY & FRUGALITY ARE  PRECIOUSLY FORGOTTEN IN TODAY’S SOCIETY!

The Lake District of England

As I fastrack into my college days in England, one of the most beautiful places that I visited & roamed is the Lake District to the north of Liverpool. In those days, we poor students hitch-hiked quite a lot in our travels. It was pretty safe & in this particular case, all it took was one hitch ride from Liverpool & we were completely in a world of paradise beauty. Such was the inspirational surrounds of the famed English poet William Wordsworth who penned the above beautiful “Daffodils” poem.

As seen from the above map, there are many lakes in the District & because of time restriction, it was not possible for me to visit them all. Among those that I still remember fondly are Lake Windermere (the largest of all), Grasmere & Derwent Water. In Lake Windermere, I had the greatest boating pleasure. I failed however to find the field of daffodils which inspired Wordsworth.

I fell in love with the place so much that I visited the location even on weekends or short breaks covering & capturing the changing beauty of the place with the coming & going of different seasons of the year. Spring & Summer were great times to be there for roaming the hills & vales; Winter & Autumn with its colourful foliage & fallen leaves. It was there I had the experience of watching salmons fighting their way up the rapids to the upper reaches for their seasonal spawning.

Accommodation was cheap & convenient then. Apart from the Youth Hostels, there were the Bed & Breakfast type of accommodation which provided more comfort than the former.

Don’t Grow Old, Grow Up!

Growing Old Together . . .

Chronologically, we can’t help but growing old. We say our children have all grown up and we grow old! Of course, this is nature’s way. However, there’s a distinction between growing old and growing up. The former has to do with the question of physical growth, attaining grey hair, balding crown of head, wrinkling here and there and adding years to our age. As a matter of fact, the years ahead of us diminish with the years behind us.

Growing up means maturing with the years. The Chinese like to say: “I have eaten more salt than you have eaten rice.” Matured age differs from chronological age in that we have learnt from life’s experiences, past mistakes and lessons. Indeed with the passing years we should have a better understanding of life itself, a better insight into human nature; we acquire more understanding of self and others. We become more mellow and less hot-tempered. We attain more wisdom hopefully. But for some of us – do we really change?

It is a curious fact that when we are old and feeble, young ones like to tease us that we are undergoing ”second childhood”. This might possibly be true if with all the years behind us we have learnt nothing. Forgetfulness is forgivable, but foolishness certainly not. With age we should be likened to sage. Foolishness cannot be tolerated under all circumstances.

Experiences are good masters, but we must master the experiences. It is like being forewarned, and therefore we must be forearmed. Like “elders” in the churches, they should have acquired and accumulated vast spiritual experiences to afford them the right and the responsibility to impart and influence the rest of the congregation. Have you earned your right? Are you fit to be where you are?

Fact Is Stranger Than Fiction

With the storming news of Da Vinci Code and other controversial religious writings, it is timely to take a look at the above topic.

Believe it or not. Fact is often stranger than fiction. Fiction is composed through human imagination without any relevance to happenings in real life. It’s often wild and unbelievable. Fact, however, is truth, with its basis on actual happenings in life. Yet, often we choose not to believe a fact if it’s strange and mysterious and are led astray to believe as fiction instead.

The Bible is full of mysteries and intrigues. They are strange but true. But do we choose to believe? Whatever we believe and whatever justification or rationalization we may have for not believing, a fact is a fact. It stands tested through the passage of time without change or camouflage or gimmick in order to attract attention to it. A fact needs not be proved. It stands supreme and at times exists without human understanding, for the simple reason our human wisdom is limited by our finite mind. God however is infinite and almighty.

A point of fact must however be stressed here. We human being tend to accord more credibility to what we read in the daily newspaper than the Bible. It does not stand to reason to believe all the garbage that is often dished out to the reading public with its fill of sensationalism! Hot gossips and sensation sell papers and therefore it’s good for business as far as the world of journalism is concerned. Publicity, free or otherwise, is good for the bottom line in the business account. Is human life so boring that we need to seek after escapism in the thrills and spills of sensationalism in the world of make-believe?

Neither consideration nor responsibility is accorded to the moral question of good or bad. By and large in the business world, what counts is the bank account. Excitement is the key upon which is based the premise of advertisement. Excitement creates happenings, and so be it!

All miracles are astounding and fascinating. But the miracles Jesus performed were not supernatural sideshows. They were intended to confirm God’s faithfulness among his people. Moreover, those who were healed or delivered from oppression often had to display faith. With disbelieving audiences, no miracle is possible. Faith is the catalyst that brings about possibility out of impossibility.

In John 2:1-11, we read of the miracle during the marriage feast at Cana in Galilee when Jesus turned water to wine, symbolizing the beginning of His ministry.

It’s a known fact that good wine mellows with age. But one hot day in the little dusty town of Cana, the wedding host ran out of wine even before the party had run its course. Indeed it was a serious indictment and blunder. Jesus and His mother Mary were among the invited merry guests. With a maternal concern for the host, she entreated Jesus to do something.

What could Jesus do? In fact, He protested to His mother that His time has not yet come- which statement in itself is mysterious. What added to the mystery is the fact that Jesus simply told the house servants to fill six stone jars with fresh cool water. That was all. The water turned out to be the best wine ever!

Yet more exciting stories can be found in the Bible. Utterly amazed and perplexed, three thousand coverts were added to their number on the day of Pentecost. The violent wind, the tongues of fire and the languages were all mystifying. Such was the power of the manifestation of the Holy Spirit. Such an awesome display got the attention of the 3,000 that day who joined the little movement and marked the birth of the church, which today claims the one billion mark throughout the world.

Yes, the Bible has more than its fair share of excitement. Yet, like the doubting Thomases that we are, we choose not to believe. Its great spiritual treasures of amazing stories, astonishing miracles and intriguing facts have endured through the test of time. Till today, modern scholars and scientists have not been able to provide any logical and natural explanation for the happenings contained therein.

Believe it or not. It’s true. You need to summon every iota of faith to believe and trust in God. That is the only way.

A Christian’s Heavenly Wealth

Here’s a story worth sharing & spreading especially in times like this when mankind is lost in the world of GREED & WORLDLY OBSESSIONS.

A tax officer came one day to a poor Christian to determine the amount of taxes he would have to pay.

The following conversation took place:

“What property do you possess?” asked the assessor.

“I am a very wealthy man,” replied the Christian.

“List your possessions, please,” the assessor instructed.

The Christian said:

First, I have everlasting life, John 3:16

Second, I have a mansion in heaven, John 14:2

Third, I have a perfect conscience & peace that passes all understanding, Philippians 4:7

Fourth, I have joy unspeakable, 1 Peter 1:8

Fifth, I have divine love which never fails, 1 Corinthians 13:8

Sixth, I have a faithful wife, Proverbs 31:10

Seventh, I have healthy, happy obedient children, Exodus 20:12

Eighth, I have true, loyal friends, Proverbs 18:24

Ninth, I have songs in the night, Psalms 42:8

Tenth, I have a crown of life, James 1:12″

The tax assessor closed his book, and said, 
”Truly you are a very rich man, but your property is not subject to taxation.” 
I pray that all of us will have this kind of tax free “wealth.”

This is what it means to be rich . . . 
Rich with the blessings of our Almighty God. 
Blessed be His name forever. Amen!

Witnessing the Rare “Full Circle of the Rainbow”

The “Full Circle” phenomenon has been mentioned in the Bible twice only: Ezekiel 1:28 and revelation 4:3 which include the “full circle of the rainbow” of God’s glory. The day we come face to face with God, we shall begin to understand the full circle of His glory, His kindness to man, His love & wisdom.

We only see a part rainbow occasionally. God sees it continually. Rainbow had a special significance to Noah’s descendants, that the rain would never be again become an earth-engulfing flood. We know that it is the sun that shines through the rain which paints the beauty of the rainbow. To Noah’s descendants, they would never case to rejoice & praise God for the promise of the rainbow . . . and that then was not even a “Full Circular Rainbow”.

Spiritually, we also know that “when a person consciously sees the smile & love of God in the midst of present trouble that the the true glory & beauty of Christian life is revealed to the world around.”

My wife & I together with 13 others, after a dedication service, had the privilege of witnessing the “full circle of the rainbow” phenomenon on Perth Hill on Sunday, 28 September 1997 at 8.00 am.

Now, on a less serious note, it’s my pleasure to share with you some of the glorious sights of rainbow occurrences around the world. These are God’s gifts to feast your eyes. They are semicircular rainbows – still a rare sight to behold with some of them having a fainter secondary rainbow.

Mathematical Logic

1778 – 1831

Logic, a kind of critical thinking, is the study of reasoning. Logic is used in most intellectual activity, but is studied primarily in the disciplines of philosophy, mathematics, and computer science. Logic examines general forms which arguments may take, which forms are valid, and which are fallacies.

Logic is also studied in argumentation theory.

Logic has its origins in several ancient civilizations, including ancient India, China and Greece. Logic was established as a discipline by Aristotle, who established its fundamental place in philosophy. The study of logic is part of the classical trivium.

Averroes defined logic as “the tool for distinguishing between the true and the false”; Richard Whately, ‘”the Science, as well as the Art, of reasoning”; and Frege, “the science of the most general laws of truth”. In the philosophy of mathematics, Benjamin Peirce became known for the statement that “Mathematics is the science that draws necessary conclusions“, and believed, along with George Boole, that mathematics could be used to analyze logic.

The concept of logical form is central to logic, it being held that the validity of an argument is determined by its logical form, not by its content. There four categories of logic: First Formal Logics – the other three being Informal, Symbolic & Mathematical Logic.

Mathematical Logic really refers to two distinct areas of research: the first is the application of the techniques of Formal Logic to mathematics and mathematical reasoning, and the second, in the other direction, the application of mathematical techniques to the representation and analysis of Formal Logic.

Consistency, validity, soundness, and completeness are the important properties that logical systems must have – in that the theorems must not contradict, interfere, guarantee to be true & can be proven.

The earliest use of mathematics and geometry in relation to logic and philosophy goes back to the ancient Greeks such as Euclid, Plato, and Aristotle. Many other ancient and medieval philosophers applied mathematical ideas and methods to their philosophical claims.

For our purpose in simplifying matter & to present an easy illustration, here’s a somewhat “fun” way to look at Mathematical Logic:

The danger of forever crediting yourself with your success is ever present. The popular phrase of being “a self-made man” leads only to conceit, pride and eventually to one’s downfall. We have heard stories of tall poppy syndrome, rich and powerful men crashing to nothingness. It’s alright to work hard and smart through sweat and tears to achieve success, provided we avoid the pitfall of claiming it all to our own self-reliance, disregarding the grace and mercy of God which made all things possible.

The American philosophy of emphasising that winning is everything runs against the grain of giving due credit to God. They say that you are either a winner or a loser. There’s no second place in life, or as in the Olympics; sportsmen resort to steroids and all forms of drugs to achieve success. Our own sportsmen and women are not exempted in their similar quest for success.

Do we really deserve our individual rights and privileges and all the entitlements that accompany success? “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me”- such thought and attribute only lead to the grave danger of eventual failure. We are but custodians or stewards of the wealth that God deems fit to bestow upon us. He gives and He can also easily take it all back.

To continue in His grace and mercy is to accord God that honour and due praise.

We need to avoid the danger of developing secular legalism as believers. All that is required of us is to remain faithful, to love God as He loves us and to get to know Him. The notion of being grateful seems to have been thrown out of this world. We are so used to taking without wanting to give that a “grabbing syndrome” is prevalent, particularly in the capitalist world.

Our pride will prevent us from experiencing God’s grace and mercy. Our cold cold hearts must warm vertically towards Him above, and horizontally reaching out to others with feelings of graciousness, generosity, kindness and care. Humbleness is more welcome than haughtiness. Let God continue to shower you with blessings to accomplish whatever you pursue. It’s through His grace and not our work that accomplishment is realised.

US Extreme Game of Economic Dominoes

It is as though US is playing an economic game on the world stage, & all the countries are playing along dangling on the string or as cards or domino tablets falling along as “waves of tsunami” sweep over them.

Ever played Dominoes? The global economic fallout or meltdown is kind of similar to the domino effect. The economic hammer or axe knows no friends or foes. Every sphere of human endeavour is sort of interlinked or entwined in the economic meltdown. Like the newspapers, the source of news & information, if not for the bad news there would be no news. Their revenue is fast depleting with decreasing commercial advertisements & deepening deficits. They have to come out fast with a complete menu of alternatives before sinking under.

Paul Volcker, who was the Chairman of the Federal Reserve under United States Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan (from August 1979 to August 1987) & currently Chairma of the newly formed Economic Recovery Advisory Board under President Barack Obama, in his recent address to the Canadians in Toronto as part of the Grano Speakers series, suggested that the banking world could do with more Canadas. He pointed out that the basis of strong banks lies in the traditional commercial banking practices of “taking in money & providing credit” – unlike the high-risk financial highwire acts that brought down Wall Street. In this light, Canada is far better off then the US, Europe or UK & Japan. Trust & confidence are two key words in the world of banking & investment. Paul Volcker really hit the nail on the head.

The crux of the global problem is that US “Financial Frankensteins” spun their vast economic web enveloping & capturing their unsuspecting victims the world over, including the City State of Singapore draining off substantially a great percentage of its assets through its Tamasek’s investments. It’s likened to a worst form of financial cancer spreading without any imminent hope in sight. It’s doom that projects all the gloom without any comfortable room or garden to bloom.

In totality, all the Rescue Packages amount to more than $4 trillion, an amount nearly ten times larger than the budget deficit for all of 2008. In just 30 odd days Obama has earned the distinction of becoming the single profligate spender in history. The $4 trillion is made of $787 billion stimulus package, $3 trillion administration’s bank bailout plan & $275 billion anti-foreclosure plan.

Do you realise how immense or massive US$4 trillion dollars is? Can you visualise it? To help you see the picture here’s a couple of illustrations:

1.If you were a very rich man living at the time of Christ … and you could have started saving $1 billion per year every year thereafter, you’d still be only half way there! You’d need still another 2000 years to finance what Obama has committed to spending in just the one month since he began his presidency.

2. If you could borrow $4 trillion at 6% interest, your interest payments alone would be $240 billion per year, $548 million per day, $761,000 per second.

As can be seen, there is no quick fix solution in monetary terms or time. Of all countries in the world, China is perhaps in the best position in the face of this financial crisis. It keeps saying that it has to take care first of its own internal economy, which is suffering a slowdown in the economic fallout, before it can venture out & extend its helping hands. US however is fast to extend its hands of economic friendship & sealed its relationship with China through its State Secretary Hilary Clinton on her maiden overseas (Asian) overture.

I categorically maintain that it’s GREED that breeds the fall, & it’s GREED that’s swallowing them all!

Benjamin Franklin would say this: “He does not possess wealth; it possesses him.” People can be so materialistic and self-centered that community spirit becomes lacking. It follows that if wealth is lacking & debts are mounting, death would be sounding.

Predictably, some of their policies will help. Most will fail … backfire … and aggravate the crisis. And in the end, a whole new monetary system will be needed. It will be interesting to speculate what will the consequential world order be? Which country will ultimately emerge victoriously & powerfully on the world stage?



Can We Really Understand All Things?

The World In God’s Hands

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” – Isaiah 55: 8-9

From the above quote, it is evident God’s ways are beyond our imagination. Our finite gray matter will in no way capable of understanding God’s ways. God often orchestrated events to show absolutely his glory – happenings that might go against all human understanding and action. For instance:

  • The miraculous deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt with Pharaoh’s

hot pursuit and the parting of the Red Sea.

  • With Lazarus’ death to demonstrate the power of rising up to life again.
  • The underdog story of David and Goliath.
  • The miracle of walking on the water with Peter stepping out of the boat.
  • Judas’ betrayal was one of mystery, but without which there could be no resurrection.

Such unexplainable power is what miracles are all about. “I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony.” ~ John 3:11. When men are driven to the edge and all things seem impossible, then you’ll see “all men drawn unto Me.”

Today, there is that danger that men are losing touch with God. We are driven closer to our own understanding and supposedly great human intelligence by the progress we are making in the field of human endeavour. Be cautious and be forewarned that we may be feeling all too superior to need God. The converts in the early Church changed the world they lived in because of what they saw and heard. Are we not seeing enough of God’s hands in the happenings in the world today? Do we really want a catastrophic event in order to turn to God?
