Chinese Civilisation – No More of the Historical Humiliation, Oppression or Suppression

Calligraphic Benevolence

You can’t pull or push a good person down

Nor can a top civilisation be oppressed & down.

In whatsoever way, you can’t expect to stand tall by oppressing & suppressing others.

This is a good short history for all Chinese to read to have a better insight & understanding as to who you are.

Chinese Civilisation is centred on goodness, benevolence & harmony. It is culturally directed rather than materialistically.

Never in the history of mankind has a civilised race been so humiliated by the western world & Japan (a minuscule of a nation). The unknown author of this excellent article chooses to remain anonymous for good reasons. Justice is never served. Aggressors & perpetrators are allowed to go free with deals to the advantages of the western power. What the Jews suffered in the Holocaust is nothing compared to what the Chinese went through . . . in terms of intensity, numbers, moral & duration.
Yes,”The Sick Man of Asia”, that was what the western powers used to call
China for more than 2 hundreds years before the World War 2.

The earlier few centuries of supposedly “friendly” European conquests turned the world into an ocean of colonies. The Africans were turned into slaves, the natives of both Americas massacred, the Australian aborigines were similarly largely exterminated. The ancient civilisation of China was crippled, fragmented and dismantled into pieces. After the Western powers brought down the decadent Qing Dynasty with the might of modern firearms, the Chinese civilisation was turned into a pariah race of nothingness by the invaders in their own country. The foreigners did not bring anything good but oppression, bullying and raiding China’s wealth and dignity by all kinds of deceptive means, and by the barrel of the gun. The Japanese joined in and even thought of conquering and ruling the whole of China as their colony. The Chinese were weakened & labelled as the “Sick Man of Asia” through opium addiction brought on by the British East India Company.

There was a moment of salvation when Japan attacked Pearl Harbour and declared war on the Western power. China and its peasant soldiers were needed to open another front to sap the fighting power and resources of the Japanese. A large part of the Japanese Imperial Army was held down in China by the peasant soldiers. History would not be the same if the Japanese could run through China without resistance and conquer the whole of Asia.

After the war there was a brief moment of equality for China as a key member of the Allied Forces that fought against the Japanese. Chiang Kai Shek was seated with the Allied leaders like Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt in Potsdam and Cairo to divide the world among the victorious Allied Powers. China was lucky to have its lost territories back. Chiang was more like a flower vase, inconsequential, and would not be deserving of any war loot. His presence among the leaders of the big powers was a consolation that gave China a little recognition as a big nation, more for window dressing.

This little moment of dignity did not last long when Mao Zedong defeated Chiang and China adopted communism as a state ideology. This turn of event led to a renewed and concerted Western effort to brand and condemn the Chinese civilisation as peasants, rogues, dumb, uncivilised, aggressive and the pariahs of the human race, a good for nothing race that was lack of talent, unproductive and unimaginative, and unfit to join the advanced nations of the West. This was the hopeless China painted by the West. They kept repeating the misinformation daily in all western media, like they are doing to North Korea today that the whole world simply believed so. Chinese are useless, Chinese are lame, Chinese are bad.

Cold Wars, containment policies, encirclement, depriving China of its rightful seat in the UN, blocking China from joining international organisations like the WTO and the Groupings of rich nations, were history now. In the last 40 odd years, China came storming back on its

own despite all the sanctions and barriers and threats against its rise as a nation and the Chinese people as a civilization, old, ancient, but not useless and remote of talents.

Throughout the two hundred years of Western oppression and suppression, the Chinese civilisation was not allowed to surface, no opportunity to break out and be the equal of other nations. The Chinese civilisation was down and out in despair. Many Chinese had doubts in themselves, and were ashamed to be Chinese. The Westerners reinforced this belief by sneering at them, contributing negative literature furiously to debase the Chinese, discriminated against them in practically every human endeavour and industry. In the USA there were racist laws forbidding the Chinese from higher skill jobs. The image and perception of useless and untalented Chinese became a self fulfilling prophecy. The Chinese civilisation was a joke, a condemned race that was lacking in industry and innovation.

On its own, slowly and steadily the Chinese rebuilt their nation and their civilisation, with little foreign talents and assistance, China has over taken Japan and is closing in on the US for the number One world power, economically and militarily. They have proven that they could match the West in every field of industry. The oppression and suppression of a civilisation have failed, and a revitalised China has assumed its rightful place as a proud nation among nations. The Chinese civilisation is no longer to be spitted at, to be kicked around by the Western powers or by teeny weeny little Asian states.  It is now a force to be reckoned with and to be respected on its own merits.

The tag of being the “Sick Man of Asia”, a semi colony of the West, a broken country with nothing, no inventions, no modern industries, no talents except poverty and all the trappings of a poor and backward third world country vanished over a few decades. There is renewed pride as a people, a nation and a civilisation in the new China. A phoenix has risen from the ashes. There is no turning back. The Chinese have found their way back and will leap frog over the West in science and technology and in all things, while the West are still trying to restrain their advances by hook and by crook.

Today, the overseas Chinese are also starting to rediscover themselves, their pride and dignity as a respectable people. They too find some renewed confidence that they are not rubbish and useless as the West wanted to hole them in, to be bullied by even little third world people, to be told to go home in western countries. They too share the pride of an ancient civilisation seeking a second chance in renaissance, to achieve in whatever they seek to do, to be a respectable people and civilisation on par with the best in the world. They no longer lower their heads in shame as they go about their lives. They are standing tall, heads and shoulders to the Western civilisation with the knowledge that they are just as good if not better. The Chinese civilisation is reviving and will no longer be oppressed and suppressed again.

Right through history no country has ever succeeded to superimpose its culture upon China. Quite the contrary, a reversed process known as “Sinicisation” happened, whereupon the unwanted occupiers came to adopt Chinese way of life, language, culture & all.

Mahjong – Chinese Greatest Recreational Pastime Game

Chinese Favourite Mahjong Game

Mahjong has been the greatest recreational pastime game since the

1900s & is fast catching on with westerns in modern time. Usually 4 persons will play the game. They can play for hours! These days high tech also come into play with special designed collapsable mahjong table equipped with device for automatic shuffling of tiles & assembling them all ready for play.

However, I think half the fun is lost from its play because “table swimming of the tiles with your hands” generates stimulation & excitement. Some people also like the sound of it & this all add up to the enjoyment of the noisy game. Gamblers make a career of it. I once had a neighbour supporting two wives & several children  playing mahjong for his livelihood.

Westerners at Popular Mahjong Game

In the early days of mahjong in the mid-19th Century, bone and bamboo tiles were manufactured by a whole village working together. One household would specialize in sawing the planks of bamboo, another would specialize in painting characters on the tiles, and so on.

When the mahjong craze of the 1920’s broke out in America, China quickly ran out of cow bones and the demand for thousands of mahjong sets became too much for small villages to handle. So bones were imported from slaughterhouses in Chicago and mahjong tile production moved to large factories in Shanghai.

These days, while most mahjong tiles are made out of fiberglass and melamine, production of traditional bone and bamboo tiles has shifted back to the villages. As in the past, each household has a specialty, and the production methods are basically unchanged from 150 years ago. In the town, a great number of households are involved in manufacturing mahjong sets. One household will cut the bone and bamboo, another shapes the tiles, another specialized in painting, and so on.

USS Pennsylvania US Navy Ohio-Class Ballistic Missile Submarine

Been in commission since 1989

Twenty years it was first launched, USS Pennsylvania remains the largest & most lethal submarine in the US Navy. You can’t see her or hear her. She can submerge in water at depth of 250 metres & remain there for six months, Yshe is a super dreadnought battleship. & she can run for twenty years without refuelling. It’s nuclear-powered.

She is the most lethal weapon ever designed. An apocalypse machine capable of devastating an entire continent! The USS Pennsylvania is the highest class of US submarine.

A submarine such as this is less vulnerable & less of a sitting target to enemies’ air power.

The Navy has 18 Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines and guided missile submarines.

The Irony & Tyranny Of It All . . .

By Paul Chong / Friday, 7 November 2014

210px-US-DeptOfNavy-Seal.svg

The 9/11 attack on the twin towers of the World Trade Centre, the mystery of which still hangs in the air. Believably, it’s a ploy & strategy for US justification to strike at others.

It’s moronic, insane & totally unthinkable for any country in the world to dare to invade or attack the US with all its war weapons & sophisticated military technology, nuclear power & capabilities, war ships & plane fighters, its fleet of aircraft carriers, its thousands of military bases covering the surface of the world. It would be suicidal & absolutely insane to say the least.

However, US is contradictorily telling the world that its national safety & security are being threatened. It’s driving itself like crazy to war with Russia, creating turmoil , chaos & instability just about everywhere. Its gutter level of propaganda is unimaginable.

President Obama, recipient of the Nobel Prize Award for Peace, has waged more wars than his predecessor Bush, besides constantly threatening wars on others. This is really ironic & laughable for he should be expected to promote peace rather than war. Shouldn’t his Nobel Prize be withdrawn?

There’s an old adage to make friends rather than enemies for even one enemy may turn out to be everywhere you turn. The Chinese are being wise extending peace & goodwill wherever they go – building, developing & sharing with other nations the prospect of prosperity. It’s clear to see the American are doing the reverse laying waste & destruction.

The American are indeed following the footstep of Islam, as invented by Prophet Mohammad, not as a religion of peace but as to justify his aggregation of worldly power & wealth.

If the American act as though all Muslims are evil, they run the risk of creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. There are well educated Muslims who generally are decent & peace-loving who deserve human respect & friendship.

Smile begets smile. Aggression begets aggression. That’s the natural law in operation. The same goes towards making friends or enemies.

I am no politician but like most observers will perceive, US is driving in all possible directions to provoke Russia to war over the question of Ukraine. Good thing that Russia has the good sense to remain cool & patient. Both countries have nuclear capabilities. Should there be a war, both will be annihilated.

China is not a hostile country. It certainly does not come near to compare with the might & power of US military. China quite easily is still 20 years behind the US in terms of military capabilities & technology. Given US technical assets, it will be a long way before China stands head over shoulder in this respect . . . unless China has had made some secret serious strides in the last few years.

What is there for US to fear except fear itself. Let’s hope US is not acting like a lame tiger in the jungle of survival, desperately pouncing & devouring on every animal big or small.

1066 My Kirkby College Number & All That . . .

By Paul Chong                                        3 November 2014

Modern KLKuala Lumpur

1066, well remembered by the British, is considered one of those dates in Medieval England which is difficult to forget. At the start of 1066, England was ruled by Edward the Confessor. By the end of the year, a Norman – William the Conqueror – was king after defeating Edward’s successor, Harold, at the Battle of Hastings. With three kings in one year, a legendary battle in October and a Norman in charge of England, it is little wonder that people rarely forget the year 1066. Many historians view 1066 as the start of Medieval England.

When I was in Kirkby Teachers’ Training College (Liverpool, UK) in 1959/60, I was viewed with much curiosity & interest by the administrative staff, including Principal (Papa) Gurney because of my college number 1066. Though I learned British history in Malaya (then known as), I must confess I wasn’t much of a lover of British history or for that matter any history. My dislike for history was due to the fact, I always got events & dates confused. So I was unaware & oblivious of the tremendous significance that my college number was invoking.

Our history lecturer Mr Kennedy was exceptional good in his field of making history come to life. He taught us mainly on the History of British Malaya & all that was true happenings historically . . . there was no attempt in historical cover-up. History cannot lie! I remember well:

  • the story of Parameswara aka Iskandar Shah (1344 -1414) who fled the island kingdom of Singapore (when it fell to the Kingdom of Majapahit) to establish the Malacca Sultanate in 1402. He was a Hindu, later converted to Muslim.

  • the story of the legendary Admiral Hang Tuah and his 4 sworn brothers – Hang Jebat, Hang Kasturi, Hang Lekir and Hang Lekiu. All five of them for courage & fighting skills shown were appointed as warriors by the Sultan of Malacca. They were in fact Chinese Muslims from China as I later learnt. Sad to say, for political reasons best known to UMNO (the Malays’ political power), their stories are today lost & torn from the pages of the Malaysian history.

  • British Intervention in Malaya 1873. The British first became involved with Malay politics formally in 1771, when Great Britain tried to set up trading posts in Penang, formerly a part of Kedah. The British colonised Singapore in 1819. Here British played its highest order of diplomacy & under the guise of settling peace between rivalling clashes of economic interests, especially in the tin industry then, they very shrewdly came stay as colonial masters. Independence was granted on 31 August 1957.

The commercial landscape of Malaysia was undeniably established by the Chinese, the “most assiduous race in the economic pursuit”. The towns & cities all bear Chinese characteristics even today. Chinese traders & businesses were/are everywhere – factories, tin mining, rubber plantations & just about any commercial activities.

Dato Musa Hitam, a former Deputy Prime Minister, deposed & cast aside by none other than Mahathir, made one little known secret when addressing a group of us who were then involved with the political defunct ADMO group – Alliance Direct Membership Organisation. This organisation was conceived in 1970s with the brilliant idea of doing away with communal/racial politics & to attract professional people from all walks of life irrespective of colour, class or creed. Dato Ghaffar Baba, the DPM, was then our advisor & overseer. We were under the Alliance (present Barison National).

In Ipoh (Perak State) its chairman was Sir James Crawford, a British rubber planter stationed in Sungei Siput, & I was than his secretary for the group. We were attracting a lot of members, English speaking professionals – teachers, lawyers, doctors & business people. From records known, membership in Kuala Lumpur soared even more. We were getting the cream of the population mass.

However, ADMO died a quick political death, when we heard no more of it! It was presumably a political suppression . . . moving too quickly for comfort.

What did Dato Musa Hitam tell us? He said the Chinese were themselves to be blamed right from the beginning. Industrious, diligent & intelligent as the Chinese are, they were overly concentrating on businesses & trade and virtually ignoring the advantage of having political power. With political power comes the control of economic power.

The Malays couldn’t/can’t match the Chinese or the Indians in the economic war, but now they are the political masters, kings & queens.

Historical facts can’t be disputed or gainsaid.

History is an academic discipline.

Chinese Meritocracy Vs Western Democracy

Hong Kong Chinese Singing & Dancing With Motherland China

All That Glitters Is Not Gold” is a poem written by J. R. R. Tolkien for his fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings. It is a verified truism meaning that not everything that looks precious or true turns out to be so. The phrase is appicable to people, places, or things & political systems that promise to be more than they really are. The expression, in various forms, originated in or before the 12th century and may date back to Aesop. In William Shakespeare‘s play “The Merchant of Venice, a line therein employs the word “glisters,” a 17th-century synonym for “glitters” which renders this saying its popularity.

Gold in its raw form appears dull and does not glitter. Panning for gold often results in finding pyrite, aka fool’s gold, which reflects substantially more light than does authentic gold.

Western democracy is not the be-all & end-all of the government system. For all its faults & follies, US – self-acclaimed as the champion of democracy – is intimidating others to follow suit.

Western Democracy, as practised in the West particularly in the US, isn’t as precious as deemed to be. It is shattering, chaotic, unequally representative, manipulated by the rich & powerful, controlled by big corporations and manned by diplomats & politicians with fork tongues. Lies & hidden agenda are evident everywhere. Instead of spreading peace & goodwill, western democracy is spreading war & destruction. Compare what the Chinese government is planning & doing in building, developing & sharing globally as against the intimidation & forces of destruction unleashed by the US.

Western democracy does not guarantee fairness & justice irrespective of colour, class or creed. US is probably the most corrupt nation in the world and in more & bigger ways than any others. Relatively, US has more poor & impoverished people than China. Read “How China lifted 500 million people out of extreme poverty” at http://skollworldforum.org/2014/03/13/china-lifted-500-million-people-extreme-poverty/.

This number of 500 million lifted out of poverty is greater than the total population of US! This speaks volume for the Chinese Communist government . . . an incredible performance with none to compare. This is but only one aspect of China’s achievements.

If the protesting Chinese students in Hong Kong (Occupy Central or Umbrella Movement) are seeking to find gold at the end of the end of the western rainbow, they will be much disillusioned. Right now Hong Kong Chinese may be craving for democracy without realising the pros & cons of the system. They may not even catch sight of the rainbow, let alone seeking for it.

Internationally, there has been a growing understanding that the Chinese government has never been a monolith, but since Deng Xiaoping’s era Chinese government officials are receptive & open to outside ideas that are well tested & proven relevant to China’s specific circumstances & needs. It’s logical to adapt, adjust & adopt in accordance to your own circumstances & requirements.

China is practising a unique brand of democracy, born out of needs & historical circumstances. The Mainland Chinese are no “monkies/monkeys” simply aping the West. They have the benefits of hindsight and the wisdom of some 5,000 years of civilisation. In fact, no visitor to China can today find any sign of communism.

China is blooming, growing & prospering. It does so all within only one whole generation – a feat unsurpassed by any other country, not UK nor US. With prevailing peace, stability & harmony, further growth & progress can be achieved.

China has come a long way. This is just the beginning. The best is yet to come. More than 100 million people still remain in dire poverty in rural areas. China is rendering its vast resources to change the face of China & the world and no doubt Hong Kong is not forgotten.

Hong Kong Chinese would be wise to close all its umbrellas, pack up & go back to their books & class/lecture rooms and be prepared to stand proud as Chinese. China has a more secured & protective umbrella for the Hong Kong Chinese. Ultimately, “ask not what China can do for you, but what you do for China.” In so doing, you’d be carving your name in China’s history.

Democracy” should be rightly spelt as “Demo-crazy”.

China Is Hong Kong’s Future

Paul Chong/24 October 2014

hong-kong-protestHong Kong – Occupy Central

Don’t be British stooges nor be the “running dogs” of US

Hong Kongers, Hong Kongese or Hongkees, whatever name the people in Hong Kong like to be known as, are like “frogs in the well” . . . so confined & restricted in their outlook that they don’t know the realities of life in the outside world. For far too long (156 stolen years) they have been “kidnapped, forcibly occupied, indoctrinated & influenced by an evil imperial regime whose domination is no less evil in India, Malaysia & other colonies.

You know the world would have been a better place now if Adam & Eve hadn’t failed to disobey God about eating the forbidden fruit. Western media are more cunning & devious than the Devil in controlling the hearts & minds of people. It is not the object of this writing to detail their acts, but the diagram below demonstrates clearly the whole propaganda machine at the disposal of US & its puppets:

The Propaganda Macine

For example, Hana Alberts, an editor & writer for Forbes & alternatively for the weekly HK Magazine, must have got rocks in his head when he wrote in his article “We Are All Hongkongers” of a “borrowed place living on borrowed time”. This is clearly a journalistic lie & propaganda of western media to create instability & further insinuating with the question of constantly ”struggling with identity issues”.

If the people in Hong Kong know their root & genealogy, they will understand that they are Chinese . . . yes, nothing but Chinese with ancestral ties in Mainland China. A large part of them are Cantonese, having come from the province of Guangdong. The national language medium of Mandarin is understood by most in Hong Kong. There’s no question of “identity issues.” Before taking flight, you must fundamentally know your root.

From the Bible, Jeremiah 13:23 (King James Version):

“Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.” This clearly illustrates the notion that things cannot change their innate nature.

Hong Kong was & is part of China. It was the British who usurped Hong Kong through an unfair treaty. Britain was evil & avaricious to gain a foothold onto China and for 156 years ruled Hong Kong without democracy or free speech. In fact, the Chinese were treated as “dogs”. There were privileged clubs & designated areas where “Chinese & Dogs Are Prohibited”. Humiliation suffered by the people then may not be known by the present generation of Hong Kong. Many would not have known of the humiliation of opium addiction because of the evil trading of the British East India Company. Hopefully, the Chinese in Hong Kong are no longer “sick” oblivious & still craving for opium deviously introduced by the British.

There is no question of “borrowed time”. Hong Kong is China’s. Its sovereignty lies with China. With due respect & honour, peace & goodwill, no other western power should intervene or interfere with China’s internal affairs. Of course, outside forces are just waiting for things to go wrong, but China is no longer the “sick man” of Asia (all because of opium).

China is changing. It is not perfect, but will get better & better with the passage of time. No Utopia or Shangrila exists in this world. In fact, no visitor to Hong Kong or China can visibly fathom or see any evidence of “communistic characteristics”. Under the “one country two systems”, the Rule of Law, free speech & the right to protest are protected . . . something which the Hong Kong people never had under the British. The idea of any kind of democracy was first introduced by the Chinese government with adopting the Basic Law in 1990 including the commitment that in 2017 the territory’s chief executive would be elected by universal suffrage. It also spelt out the nomination of candidates would be a matter for a nominating committee. Democracy activists claim that China’s plans will allow it to screen out the candidates it doesn’t want.

Hong Kong people are forgetting that all its past 28 governors were appointed by the British government & was ruled from 6,000 miles away in London. All colonies failed to realise the suffering of classical exploitation with “drainage” trade benefiting the colonial masters.

There are complicated problems that require great long term insight & administrative skills, so decisions cannot be hastily made nor can it be trusted to the average Chinese citizens. The Chinese system of governance/democracy has won favour with lots of global academicians. Need I say more . . . results of economic growth & development in the last thirty years speak louder than words. Hong Kong no doubt has had its fair share.

I fail to understand the Hong Kong people’s resentment at mainlander’s success & the extent of looking down on the mainlanders – their own kind. This is really deplorable.

It’s a civil disobedience movement which began in Hong Kong on September 28, 2014. It calls for thousands of protestors to block roads & paralyse Hong Kong’s financial district if the Beijing & Hong Kong governments do not agree to implement universal suffrage for the chief executive election 2017 & the Legislative Council elections in 2020 according to “international standards.” The movement was initiated by Benny Tai Yiu-ting, an associate professor of law at the University of Hong Kong, in January 2013.

Millions have been lost since this Occupy Central started. Occupy Central was to be carried out with Love & Peace. But in exercising their rights to assemble, they are encroaching upon the rights of others. It’s unlawful when you deprive others of their livelihood such as the taxi drivers, bus drivers, business operators & others. This upheaval is causing Hong Kong to lose its role as the gateway to China

The Law has been more than patient. In the 17 years since the return, China has, whatever the gainsayers might suggest, overwhelmingly honoured its commitment to the principle of “one country, two systems”. The same mus understandably be shown by these young protestors. The golden era enjoyed by the Hong Kong people is not result of the British but of the Chinese.

Hong Kong got rich because of China. It fed an ego & an arrogant attitude when the Hong Kong Chinese came to enjoy a much higher standard of living than the mainlanders. This resulted in their arrogance of looking down on the mainlanders as being inferior peasants, poor, ignorant & uncouth. To look down on your own kind is unforgivable and they want to be associated with the westerners because of material wealth or status.

Shanghai, Shenzhen & Guangzhou would soon surpass Hong Kong. Initially, China might have needed Hong Kong but it is not really as true now. Hong Kong now would be in trouble without China. Since the return of Hong Kong China has given more & more without taking even the taxes. Hong Kong Chinese are enjoying a life style all mainlanders would be envy of.

You are urged to stop monkeying around. All things considered, stop being idealistic but be pragmatic. Hong Kong is the “Pearl of the Orient”. Don’t spoil it. China is proud of it & would do no harm to it. China is Hong Kong’s future.

China: Miner Survived 17 Years Underground

PC/29 Sept2014

miner-460x307

Survivor’s face of extreme mixed emotion

    On Tuesday, October 19, 2010

  – Chile’s 33 miners were trapped in a half-mile underground for 69 days, when part of their mine collapsed, and for 17 days they were feared dead. They were later saved in a 24 hour, $20m rescue operation and were welcomed as national heroes – setting the new world record for the Longest time survived underground after a mining accident.

Now the above record is broken by a Chinese miner Cheung Wai who survived for 17 years underground.

In China mining accidents happen all the time in the tens or hundred – especially in unauthorised mines.

This case is unique deserving a special mention.

A group of coal miners from the western province of Xinjiang had an unbelievable surprise when the gallery they were excavating opened up on a section of an old mine, that was abandoned 17 years ago after an earthquake that caused some large sections of the tunnels to collapse. While they were exploring the galleries, they stumbled upon Cheung Wai, a 59-year old survivor from the 1997 accident, obviously in a rather bad shape. He was immediately taken to the hospital where a complete evaluation of his physical and mental states will be done over the next weeks.

The poor man had remained trapped underground with the bodies of 78 of his dead coworkers, after an earthquake of a magnitude of 7.8 hit the region and caused the wooden support structure of the mine to crumble and collapse. Somehow lucky in his misfortune, Mr. Cheung was saved by the fact that some ventilation duct still connected his underground prison to the surface, allowing him access to air that was  sufficiently pure to keep him alive.

He managed to survive thanks to an emergency stash of rice and water, stored in an underground depot, conceived especially for this kind of case. The man complemented his diet by catching and eating the countless rats that pullulate in the mine, as well as collecting large quantities of some sort of phosphorescent moss, which constituted his only source of vitamins. Even though he was suffering from great physical and mental stress, he managed to give proper burials to all of his comrades, spending almost a year in this great selfless act.

Mining accidents remain common in China despite growing measures by the government to reduce the problem, which killed more than 4000 miners a year at the beginning of the millenium. Over the last years, the authorities have been cracking down on many unregulated mining operations, which account for almost 80 percent of the country’s 16,000 mines. The closure of about 1,000 dangerous small mines last year helped to cut in half the average number of miners killed, to about six a day, in the first months of this year, according to governmental statistics.

The case of Mr. Cheung remains unique and constitutes a world record, according to  the Guinness Book of Records.

Evaporative Cooler to Run Without Electricity

Inventor Zhang Kai adjusts an evaporative cooler he and his father designed to run without electricity. Photo: CFP

According to media report recently a junior high school teacher and his son in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province invented an evaporative cooler that works without electricity thus saving on utility bills..

History teacher Zhang Zizhi teamed up with his son, Zhang Kai, a college freshman majoring in electronic and information engineering, to design a cooler that works much like conventional evaporative coolers – except without an electric water pump.

“This can be useful in a tent while camping in summer,” said the elder Zhang.

According to their tests, the device is capable of cooling an average-sized room by 2 C in 10 minutes.

Standing 1.2-meters tall, the cooler consists of a metal frame with eight pieces of wet fabric hanging closely together to act as cooling pads.

Instead of using a pump to draw water onto the pads, water flows from a plastic water tank placed above the cooler.

Water flow is regulated with a drip-valve from a standard IV bag.

As hot air passes through the wet fabric, the water slowly evaporates. Water molecules are then dispersed and absorb heat from the hotter air. The larger the cooling pads, the more water evaporates.

It takes two liters of water every three hours.

The Zhangs said the device cost 60 yuan ($9.77) to build.

The father-son team seeks to develop an automatic water feeding device and replace the metal racks with a collapsible plastic frame in order to further cut costs.
